Wings of Fire Dragonets of Destiny redesign
you saw the title😛 I’m gonna put all the pictures here and then have separate sections for each dragon talking a little bit about each redesign.
Clay
So I never really liked Clay’s original design. It felt wayyyy too saturated. He’s not gonna be able to blend into mud puddles if his scales are neon orange. So I toned his colors down quite a bit and also gave him some small tusks and freckles. Second picture has his leg scar from the end of Arc 1!
Tsunami
So the dragonet prophecy says that the seawing egg would be “deepest blue,” so I thought it would be interesting if the eggs reflected what color the dragon would be. So I made Tsunami a really dark blue. I also gave her pink accents because I think it’s kind of weird that Anemone is the only seawing we know of having pink accents, why can’t the whole royal family have them? They’re pretty. Second picture has her burn scar and pearl necklace.
Glory
Somewhere in the books, it described Glory’s scales under the mountain as a lot duller than they are once she reaches the rainforest. The graphic novel didn’t use that at all, so I wanted to. I like to think that her scales got some of their color immediately after she left the cave, but she only got them up to full vibrancy after her first suntime. I think the pictures are self-explanatory.
Starflight
Bat-nosed nightwings I love you I love you I love you. I’ve been drawing nightwings with bat-like noses for at least three years now and I just love it so much. I didn’t really change a lot about Starflight’s design, but I’ve never really liked how nightwings’ wings are just COVERED in stars. I think it’d be cooler to have them more concentrated on the tips of the wings. Also idc what canon says, Starflight has a purple scarf blindfold.
Sunny
Her canon design is honestly so basic and boring for a hybrid. GIVE MY GIRL SOME MELANIN PLEASE!!! I don’t like how bright her scales are, same case as Clay. Neon yellow scales 1. Would NOT blend into sand dunes at all and make no sense for a sandwing to have that gene, and 2. Nightwings are dark. They absolutely do not have a neon yellow scales gene. I kept some saturation in her wings to give her a warm sunny feel but I really wanted her to feel more nightwingish than she does in canon.
here’s the group all together too
Decided to redesign the Shockjaw from How to Train Your Dragon.
These dragons only appeared in the games but despite that they have always been my favorite species, even if they had a kinda ugly design, so i decided to redesign them.
The Shockjaws new design is inspired by crocodiles, sailfish and peregrine falcon.
Shockjaws are described as being one of the fastest dragons so I tried to take inspiration from some of the world's fastest animals.
Their body if fairly squat and low to the ground with short robust legs and a long flat tail filled with muscle.
The webbing that runs down their back varies between males and females with males having lower webbing connections as it is more attractive for the females.
Nasal horns on Shockjaws are used to fight for territory, with the species being largely solitary with the exception of mating season. They protect their territory feircly from other shockaws and outside species of dragons.
The patterning on a shokjaws back is used to blend in when in shallow waters, this pattering is more common with individuals that live in freshwater or closer to the shoreline.
Feelers on the bottom of their jaws help shockjaws generate and detect electricity when hunting.
I had a lot of fun designing this. Originally I was going to post something else today but I just watched the new live action movie so I thought this was fitting.
“Summer” Fastfin Redesign
-from Dragons: Rescue Riders-
Colored my og Shockjaw sketch but I'm still working on the redesigning the whole body with crocodile like feet and tail, aswell as wings inspired by a peregrine falcon.
