Revising is the most stressful yet easiest component within writing any type of literature when it comes down to establishing the correct tone , grammar and message. My exact steps to revising on my own are:
1. Automatically have subtitles
2. Re-read entire document
3. Return to the papers guidelines if available
4. Find minor grammar errors- mispelling/ capitalization
5. Rearrange paragraphs to my best understand ability for my readers
6. Try to become the “Reader” and not the “Writer”
7. Try and incorporate descriptive words, or literature devices to spice up writing
8. Ask someone to revise, and opinions on what i should add or eliminate
9.Re-read once more
When I construct my writing I automatically use sub titles to organize my essay based upon what I'm going to speak upon. Relating to Losh & Alexander Issue 7 - “Rethinking Revision” when they inform their readers about the “Lincoln’s Process” of when he printed out his paragraphs cut them out and moved it around to his comfort , I use technology wise to do the same thing.
PEER REVIEW ! In my opinion the most useful and powerful tool within the “revising process” is getting others opinion. Most people can help you develop more details/main points to incorporate in your writing to either persuade or keep your audience attention. Can even help you reword fragments or sentences you have included. Lincoln Abraham and William Henry Seward according to losh and alexander have worked together on Lincoln's speeches plenty of times which is a much needed, especially with grammar and the way we present our points. Due to be use to our own writing we don't find our mistakes easily vs. others.
It’s very important to not only be the writer but you as a reader need to place your feet in the reader's shoes, because they’re your target market and you must provide them with they want or like to your best ability, if not no sale. Being the reader not only supports the writing it improve the tone and type of literary devices , to incorporate.
Revising may take it to more than 3 drafts dealing with finding the perfect fit. Losh and Alexander stated “Nobody writes perfect first drafts -- not even professionals who are already good writers”! Truth be told NO ONE IS PERFECT ON THIS LIFE OF EARTH! We all make mistakes that is why it is highly important we review what we write/type. Sometimes we as human can get caught up into our emotions and write something that only makes sense to us and not to others “Lack of self-awareness errors”.
The best revision I had received was to be confident in your writing and you will have many drafts til you get the right one. The worst revision I had…. Well now to think of it I never really had one many people gave me good advice that i did take into consideration and interpret in my writing.
My advice to the incoming freshmen entering college would have to be to be comfortable with writing multiple drafts and it's going to take time to develop the “perfect” one. Also not to be afraid of asking for advice from others you don't have to take everyone's opinion but try and interpret some that make the best sense to you and learn how to take constructive criticism.
"Well so what, Mr. Poopy Pants?"
Sometimes we all feel discouraged about our writing because of the first stages of our work but the, somewhat comical, writings of Anne Lamott brought up the stress relieving fact that all beautiful writing doesn't start off beautiful. I remember all the times I thought about having a journal and when I went to write stuff, it was a scary sight, so I just gave up. "Shitty First Drafts" explains that sometimes well written pieces of writing come from shitty beginnings and even well accomplished writers, such as herself, experience this.
We can all relate to putting words on paper and hating every word that gets put down, but that's when we take a minute to find the one-thing that isn't so bad and you go from there. I understand, upon getting a writing assignment the only thing you want is to get it done, I've been there but Lamott stresses that the first draft is just a time where you let it all flow out: the good, the bad, the ugly, all come together and is definitely not worthy of turning in. Although shitty there might be something in there that will spark an idea for the rest of the novel, essay, or short story. Rereading, reflecting, and rewriting the first draft will help you to write elegant essays that are more than likely going to get you an A.
I, personally, took from this reading, that the first draft is what it is: just a first draft. I HATE rereading what I wrote, none the less rewriting it, but without brainstorming and a horrendous first draft you might miss out on what could become something spectacular. I now realize that a "shitty first draft" is almost crucial in creating well written essays and narratives.
