Wotan

The being known as Wotan was born near the dawn of civilization.  They had been a young woman renown for her Beaty and gentle nature. One night she was attacked, beaten and violated by acolytes claiming to be ‘servants of god.’  The incident left her traumatized, her kindness stamped out and replaced with a desire for vengeance,

She studied the black arts, traveling great distances in accruing knowledge of different magics and spell-craft.  She ultimately becoming powerful mage and though she never found those responsible for her attack, many others endured her wraith. 

She learned the power of controlled reincarnation so that her soul would be reborn again and again retaining their same essence and knowledge. Sex and gender meant very little to them and sometimes they were reborn as woman, other times as a man.  In most all instances they called themselves ‘Wotan’ and sought out power and dominion through continued accusation of knowledge of dark magics. 

Closer to the modern era, Wotan battled The Green Lantern (Alan Scott) and would go on to become a primary nemesis of Doctor Fate.  Wotan battled The Justice Society and has themselves been a member of The Injustice League.  The villain has additionally had confrontations with The Specter and Zatanna.
