For over two decades, Dr. William McArthur has worked with patients with an array of health issues. One problem in particular—and that smokers seem to know little about—is COPD. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a chronic lung disease that affects millions of patients across the United States. According to the American Lung Association, COPD more than 11 million people suffer from the disease and it’s the third leading cause of death. 

What is COPD?

COPD is a chronic lung disease and is more commonly known as emphysema or chronic bronchitis. Essentially, the disease consistently constricts lung capacity and reduces the capability for a person to breathe. As time moves on, the symptoms get worse as the close in on the airway—making it harder to do anything such as sleep, walk, exercise, or breathe. 

Symptoms of COPD

COPD symptoms are not always consistent—in fact—it can seem like it is a simple common cold or seasonal allergy reaction. Some of the most common symptoms include:

Onset cough with mucus (sometimes referred to as smoker’s cough)

Shortness of breath

Wheezing

Flu-like symptoms

Because the disease is progressive, symptoms will get worse overtime. The more severe indicators of COPD include:

Difficulty with talking or breathing

Rapid heart rate

Bluish or gray colored lips and fingernails

Issues with collecting thoughts

Unexplained swelling—particularly in ankles and hands
