#PhillyPhriday: Carbonated soda water was first prepared in 1807 by Philadelphia pharmacist Townsend Speakman following the instructions of Dr. Philip Syng Physic (pictured above), who prescribed it for the relief of gastric disorders. (Speakman was assisted by John Hart, his apprentice and future son-in-law.) Speakman supplied Physick's patients with a glass of soda water each day for $1.50 per month. He later added fruit juices to the fizzy water to improve the taste, thus creating the world's first flavored soft drink (soda pop). He called it Nephite Julep.
