If you have a social media account, I'm sure you know by now that today is #givingtuesday. Started in 2012 and led by 92nd Street Y in Manhattan, Giving Tuesday was conceived as a way to channel the generous spirit of the season towards nonprofits that depend on donations to function.
It takes place on the Tuesday following Black Friday (and Small Business Saturday) (and Cyber Monday). Founding partner organizations included IAVA, Crowdrise, Groupon, Mashable, and Darden Restaurant Group. Thanks to the popularity of hashtag posting, #GivingTuesday quickly became a global movement.
As the materialism of Black Friday (and Cyber Monday) continues to push into a day meant to acknowledge thanks for what you already have in your life, it can feel good to know your money is going towards improving your local community and potentially the lives of those less fortunate. Do some research and make sure your donation is going to a trustworthy organization that benefits a cause you feel passionate about. If that happens to be One Brick, you can doante at onebrick.org/donate ;-)
