I like the interpretation I heard that part of the reason Hendrik and Sylv are kinda tense with each other as adults is that each see what they find uncomfortable about themselves in the other.
Sylv sees the repressed and miserable soldier they'd have become if they'd stayed at thier father's home and continued on the path to knighthood, and Hendrik both doesn't know how to handle someone that changed so much since childhood and someone that opted out of the path of repression and performative hypermasculinity he went down.
