Tommy watched as Evan stared at the counter— and the objects on top of it— in disbelief, his long forgotten timer ringing in the background. "This is a joke, right? Or they're broken? Defective? Th-this can't be right."
"I don't think a dozen pregnancy tests can be defective, Evan." Tommy said, also looking at the tests lined up on the counter. Six in one neat row, with six more lined up below them. There were half a dozen different brands, and they all said the same thing. Pregnant.
"But Tommy, there's no way we can both be pregnant. How are we going to manage when we both can't bend over to put our shoes on! And then we're just— going to have two babies? How are we going to manage that."
"People have twins all the time, Evan. Triplets, even."
Evan's eyes widened. "What if we have twins, Tommy. What if we both have twins? That's going to be four babies. What if we have triplets. What if we both do. We won’t have enough arms for that, Tommy!” Evan spiraled, tone bordering on hysteria at the thought of having so many babies.
"Evan, breathe." Tommy said, tapping at Evan's phone screen where it sits on the counter next to the tests to turn the alarm off before stepping closer to Evan and resting a hand on his chest, taking one of Evan's and placing it on his own chest. He took a few deep, exaggerated breaths until Evan copied him. "Don't go borrowing trouble, alright?" He said, meeting Evan's eyes. "If we both are pregnant with twins or even triplets, well, neither of us will have to get pregnant again. And, sure, our lives will get a lot more chaotic, but we'll handle it the same way we handle everything else."
