Y/N rolls a 20 on “Befriend the Dragon”…
Themberchaud rolls over, wings fluttering happily as Y/N scratches his chin…
Y/N: who’s my good pudgy dragon?! You are!
Themberchaud warbles happily…
Edgin just looks in shock…
Doric; I knew my beau had a way with wild animals…besides me
Her tail flickers seductively…

I've watched this movie 18 times and I only right now just realized that Doric and Simon have never encountered Jarnathan

A lot of the online discourse around whether Scots is a dialect or a language doesn't really interest me, because there's no real agreed linguistic definition of what makes something a language or a dialect, but also I think it's much more interesting to think about a type of speech in terms of who it is a language for and who it is a dialect for, and what both groups motivations are for that.
I also think that in a small area such as Scotland and the north of Ireland where multiple Germanic languages/dialects exist (e.g. English, Scots, Ulster Scots, Doric, Shetlandic, and I'm sure there are probably others) they probably do exist on some sort of language/dialect continuum, with a lot of blurriness between them. And also that's fine, they don't have to be neatly separated into self-contained boxes, I feel like language rarely works that way.
Y/N is pulled from their bed by an Owlbear…
Y/N: w-what?
The owlbear nuzzles and warbles…
Y/N: (chuckles) Doric. Bad dream, baby?
The Owlbear nods before carrying Y/N back to their own bed…
The owlbear lays Y/N down before shifting back into Doric…
Doric: please stay
Y/N holds her close…
Y/N: as you wish
