It would always strike him when the stress set in – nostalgia. But this time, he let it. Freely falling into the melancholy, he let the darkened skies of summer rain set the mood and somber was the atmosphere. And in the bare silence of his empty apartment, that always felt too big at times like this, he sat, with only the glow at the end of his cigarette for light.

A wandering habit that only set in at times like this. He never inhaled, just lit it like an incense, the smell serving as a reminder of warmth and old memories.

In his free hand, was an old phone, one that had just finished charging… one that he hadn’t used in years. The screen shone bright, almost blinding in the surrounding darkness, as he loaded it up and within seconds, the nostalgia overtook him with full force. His past was all written out- in black and white- in that phone. The messages of past laughs and loves and hard times… all but forgotten as he had moved on.

It was a striking difference, his current self versus the past, and he may be more stoic, more suave, more mature- but was he happier? Because the dumb, idiot of a child he was, half a decade ago, sounded truly happy, in his dumb ass messages…
