I think it’d be the first time Sirius felt like he could unequivocally trust an adult. Much as I think he adored McGonagall, she was also his teacher, and so he couldn’t necessarily confide in her without reservation. But James’s parents, unlike his own, would be willing to accept him no matter what. There’s a reason he ran to James’s house when he left home. I think the Potters gave him a sense of safety and comfort that he hadn’t seen at home for a long time, maybe ever. 

I like to think they tried to include him in their family as possible. If they were grabbing something for the family, they’d get four, even if Sirius wasn’t at their house at the time. If they were writing a letter to James, they’d also write one to Sirius. If they were speaking a different language, they’d make sure he knew it. I guarantee when Sirius was given a watch for seventeenth, it came from the Potters.
