Dog Days
Description: John has an accident in the laboratory of the Baskerville military facility. While they wait for the scientists to find a solution, he and Sherlock must re-examine the nature of their friendship as they navigate daily life and the Work, all while trying to answer the truly important questions: Is it okay to pet your flatmate if he happens to be a dog at the moment? And how exactly do you beg a self-professed sociopath for cuddles?
Review: I can't believe this is over 100k cause it does not feel that long when you read it. I absolutely adored this, it's so cute and humorous. I love Lestrade's concern and how we get to see Sherlock's fears without dampening down the happy tone of the piece. Well done.

John Watson was cold, but not as cold as he expected to be for walking the streets of London at this time of year. Although that could have something to do with the fur coat. He slowed to a stop to get his bearings. The colors around him were strange and muted; the smells that passed his wet nose were nearly overwhelming; the cold, wet pavement pressed insistently upon his paw pads.
John was not usually like this. Usually, he was human, standing at a respectable 5′6″, and living tensely with his wife. They’d been on thin ice with each other ever since she’d shot his best friend, and while usually quarrels with Sherlock would encourage him to try and get along with Mary, this last one had left him mad at the whole world until he’d calmed down and had a moment of utter clarity. “Fighting like an old married couple.” He’d never done that with Mary, but he did that often with Sherlock. He’d begun to pack when Mary had stepped into the room. And that was when he’d discovered that on top of being a lying, traitorous assassin, she was a bitter mage, too. The two-faced liar had even wished him luck getting Sherlock to let him back in!
Suddenly a door slammed open and John looked up, only to look straight into those remarkable glasz eyes, looking stormy and distant. John tried to call out his best friend’s name and could only bark, but Sherlock still looked down. John suddenly feared Sherlock would shove him out of the way, but then Sherlock stopped, and stared, and frowned. John watched warily as Sherlock squatted beside him. Sherlock’s hands wandered into the fur at John’s neck, and for a moment, John was confused, but he soon realized Sherlock was looking for a collar. John was surprised when Sherlock’s hands met a strip of fabric - he’d never even felt a collar. Sherlock’s fingers followed along the collar to a set of tags.
“Free to a competent home.” John watched Sherlock’s brow furrow. “Answers to -” Sherlock broke off, lips pursing. He looked into John’s eyes. “John.”
John barked softly in confirmation. Sherlock scratched between his ears.
“It seems we’ve both been abandoned, John. Although you seem to be handling it a bit better. You’re not exactly looking for a dealer. Come along, John.”
