Prompt : Sam and Dean are on a witch hunt and the witch ends up turning Sam into a dog for a weekÂ
Beta by @debivc78
Dude, stop it!" Dean yells, turning toward Sam.
“Sorry” Sam mumbles, finally laying still.
They’ve been in bed for half an hour, and Sam has been moving like crazy the entire time, without any explanation. He’s not horny – Dean already made an offer that was turned down quickly, and he’s not upset or preoccupied.  Well, that Dean knows of, anyway.
Dean puts his head on his brother’s chest, throwing one of his legs between Sam's to get more comfortable. He smiles happily when he feels Sam’s hand dropping on his back. Sometimes after a hunt, whether it was a good one or not, they need to feel that the other is safe. They need this little bit of comfort, to make them feel like they are home. They need to comfort each other, more than they need to comfort themselves.
The witch hunt wasn’t that bad – Sure, she was a bitch, and Dean ended up being thrown from one side of the room to the other, but considering what they’re used to, it could have been worse.
He’s already falling asleep when Sam pushes him gently, making him roll to the other side.
“The fuck's gotten into you, Sam?” Dean asks, trying to hide the pain of being pushed away with anger.
“I’m sorry, I just, I need to go”
“What? You need to go where?”
Dean watches powerless as Sam gets dressed in his running clothes before walking toward Dean, dropping a quick kiss on his lips.
“I’ll be back. Go to sleep”
“M’not gonna go to sleep without knowing where you are” Dean objects, trying to hold on to Sam’s hand “Come on, what’s going on in that big head of your?”
“Nothing, I-I'll be back, ok?”
He wants to protest and ask Sam to stay. It’s almost midnight, and it’s way past time to be going running in the goddamned forest, especially alone. But sometimes Sam needs to be alone, to clear his head from whatever is bothering him, and Dean's learned to accept that, even if he doesn’t want to.
“Be careful, alright?”
“Yeah, don’t worry”
With that, he’s gone, leaving Dean alone in the now too big bed.
He sighs, rolling on his back with his eyes glued to the celling. He can hear the tic tic of the clock on the wall, punctured by the drip drip sound of the water leak in the sink. Every now and then, a car passed by, and the whole room is lit up by its headlights, making it impossible to sleep.
If Sam were here, Dean wouldn’t have noticed any of that. Or maybe he would, but he wouldn’t have cared. The disturbing sounds would have been replaced by his brother’s moans if he was lucky, and if he wasn’t, then by his snores. He wouldn’t have care about the light from the cars, instead focused on Sammy’s face, and if that wasn’t enough, he would hide his head in Sam’s hair.
Now, everything is too loud, too bright, and he wishes he could slide inside Sam’s head, and know what's going on in that big brain and help him.
It was so easy, back when they were kids, to help Sam. If he hurt himself, a magic kiss could fix it. If he was sad, a hug was all he needed. If something was bothering him, Dean would give him candies and before he knew it, Sam was telling him everything, even if it hurt, even if it was humiliating.
He can’t buy Sam with candies anymore, and a magic kiss isn’t enough to fix a broken soul, nor does a hug can take years of abuse away.
One quick look at the clock tells him that Sam has been gone for almost an hour now, and he decides to get up from the bed. If he’s not sleeping, he may as well look for a new case.
He starts taping on Sam’s computer but stops immediately when he hears something at the door.
He waits, just to be sure that his mind isn’t playing on tricks him, but when another sound follows, he takes his gun and walks to the door.
He doesn’t know a lot of monsters who would knock on the door before entering, but then again, monsters aren’t always the smartest things in the world.
Sam is still gone, and suddenly, Dean’s mind is filled with ugly, scary thoughts. What if Sam was taken by something? What if Sam is trapped somewhere, unable to get out? What if Sam comes back, and doesn’t see Dean here? Will he think Dean has abandoned him? What if it’s already too late, and Sam is dead?
He opens the door, ready to shoot whatever is in front of him, but instead of an ugly monster, he’s face to face with a dog. A stupid dog. He sighs, getting down on his knee without letting go of the gun.
“You lost buddy?” He asks, searching for a collar on the dog’s neck
He could almost swear the dog shook his head, and he raises his eyebrows in surprise.
“You’re not lost?”
The dog shook his head again, and Dean doesn’t hide his amazement. He knows that dogs are smart, but this one seems particularly smart.
The motel has a no pets policy, but considering the state of the room, Dean doesn’t think anyone will care.
“Ok, come on in”
The dog doesn’t need to be told twice, running immediately into the room and jumping on Sam’s side of the bed.
“No, no, no” Dean orders, the dog off of the bed “That's Sammy’s side.”
The dog cries, looking sadly at Dean.  He isn’t usually sensitive to dogs, but this one knows how to make his heart melt.
“Alright” Dean rolls his eyes, letting the dog stay on the bed “He put a dog in my baby, I can let you stay on his bed, right?”
The dog shoots him an annoyed stare, like he said something bad, and Dean almost wants to apologize.
He doesn’t, of course, and chooses to do some more research. He read about a town a few miles away where someone was found dead with his heart missing. It could be nothing, but it could also be a case for them.  When in doubt, they need to check it.
He starts looking for more information but he keeps getting bothered by the dog, who's now abandoned the bed in order to nudge against Dean’s leg.
“Dude, stop it” Dean says, pushing the dog away.
Not even a second later, the dog is back, asking for attention. Dean tries to rub his back, but the dog keeps groaning, apparently frustrated.
“Are you hungry?” Again, the dog shook his head “Alright, then quit it or you’re back in the street”
The dog stops moving, looking at Dean with what looks like worried eyes, and Dean frowns again. This dog is weird, really weird.
“I need to work, ok?”
The dog groans and in one smooth motion, he jumps on Dean’s lap.
“Jesus Christ, no! Bad doggy!” He yells, trying to push the dog away. The dog isn’t big, not at all. He looks like a puppy who would be a little bigger than usual, which allows him to fit on Dean’s lap while still being too heavy for Dean to push off without effort. He doesn’t want to hurt the dog, even if he’s starting to be a little annoying.
“You can’t stay on my lap” Dean says again. But this time, when Dean starts to push him, the dog slides his head’s in Dean’s neck, holding on to him with his front legs.
Dean’s heart stops, overwhelmed by so much affection and he smiles softly, cuddling the dog gently.
“It’s ok, buddy, you can stay on my lap” Dean says, “I’m gonna call you Sammy since you keep sitting in his places. First the bed, now my lap? He’s gonna be so jealous” He laughs, rubbing the dog’s head
The dog- Sammy, looks at him with sad eyes, like he was trying to make Dean understand something, without any success.
“You missing your family?” Dean asks “They left you here, didn’t they?” He sighs, cuddling the dog again “My family left me too, multiple times. Never gets any easier, you know?”
The dog drops his head ashamedly, and Dean offers him a little smile.
“It’s ok, buddy. Things… things work out, after a while. Or so I’ve been told” He looks at the windows, waiting- hoping, to see Sam. “Maybe we could keep you? Sam would love to have a dog. Been dreaming of that since he was a kid.”
The dog starts barking at Dean’s words, as if he was trying to say something, but Dean can’t make out of what he’s saying.
“Hey, stop that! That’s enough!”
The dog doesn’t listen to him.  He barks more, his eyes pleading Dean to understand him.
“What? What is it? Did you hear something?”
He expects the dog to bark again, but instead, he rolls his eyes, the exact same way Sam would have.
Dean’s heart stops, and he watches the dog with a blank stare on his face. Is it true, could it be…? “… Sam?”
The dog barks lower this time, almost sadly.
“Holy shit, Sam?!” Dean yells, holding the dog- Sam in front of him. “What the fuck!”
Of course, Sam can’t answer, but Dean doesn’t think he would have listened to him anyway. How could he take him seriously when Sam has turned into a fucking dog?
Once again, Sam starts cuddling him, and for a few seconds, Dean thought he had dreamed everything, until he saw the red mark on Sam’s neck.
“Fucking witch” Dean mumbles, recognizing the symbol on his brother’s skin “Alright Sammy, I’m gonna find a way to fix this”
Hunting comes with rules, many rules. John made sure that his sons would follow each one of them perfectly, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to come with him. Hunting is dangerous, and he couldn’t spend his time wondering if his boys were ok.
One of the rules was to say something if you saw even one thing that was odd or didn't belong or was simply out of place. Every single thing. If Sam saw a weird looking painting, he had to say something. If Dean saw a beautiful girl in the middle of a bar full of old ugly truck drivers and bikers, he had to speak up. When it comes to the paranormal, everything matters.
Over the years, the boys stopped following the rules, ignoring their dad's advice. Dean wonders what John would say, if he could see them right now.
Sam petted a dog. Nothing more, nothing less. In fact, Dean isn’t even sure that Sam would remember it, but the surveillance cameras don’t lie. The dog only appeared for a few seconds. One second he isn’t there, the next, he’s rubbing himself on Sam’s leg.  Then once Sam had petted him, he was nowhere to be seen.
“I told you not to pet dogs when you were what, four? If you don’t know it, don’t pet it”
The guy at the motel desk looks at him like he's weird, but it’s not like Dean can blame him. He’s an FBI agent walking around with a dog in his arms, because apparently, the ground is a little too hot for Sammy.
“Were you talking to me?” The guy asks
“No, I was just… Talking to my dog”
The guy gives him a weird look but doesn’t ask anything else, choosing to leave instead.
“He thinks I’m crazy, doesn’t he?” Dean asks to Sam. He sighs when he gets no response from his brother. “Alright, time to do some research”
Doing research without Sam is complicated. It’s not that Dean can’t think for himself, he can do it just fine, but they always find a way to work things out faster when they’re together. One completing the other's thought and so on.
He spent the whole day at the library, going through old books and searching for any indication of what happened to Sam, while Sammy stayed back at the motel. He did try to take Sam with him, but the librarian tossed him out. Apparently, dogs aren’t welcomed in the library, and if you claim that it’s your brother, it only makes things worse.
“Hey Sammy” He says, entering the room
Sam jumps from the bed, rubbing himself against Dean’s legs.
Dean can’t help but smile before taking him in his arms. It’s weird, knowing that he’s holding Sam – His Sam, in his hands, like he was nothing else but a… well, a dog.
“Ok, so, I found some things and-“ Dean stops himself, sniffing the air “Dude, did you piss on the carpet again?!”
Sam whines, dropping his head ashamedly, and Dean rolls his eyes. It’s been two days since Sam turned into a dog, and he still has some problems controlling his body. That doesn't just include peeing on the floor, but also chewing on Dean’s shoes and humping his leg.
“I swear, you’re doing the laundry for at least three months after you turn back”
Sam tilted his head, paying attention at Dean’s words.
“Yeah, I found a way. Good news is, we don’t have to do anything. Bad news, though, we can’t do anything. The spell makes you stay like that for seven days, which means that you still have five days as a dog”
Sam groans, and Dean almost wants to do the same. This sucks, big time, but at least he won’t have to go on a hunt alone. If he had to and something had happened, Sam would have been left alone as a dog forever.
“I booked the room for the rest of the week, so I guess it’s just time to… Chill out?”
Sam jumped on the bed, laying his head on Dean’s lap and sighing sadly. Dean starts scratching his ears, and quickly, Sam starts wagging his tail in happiness.
“You’re a good doggy, you know that?”
Dean can’t remember when Sam stopped coming to him whatever something happened to him. Maybe it was after Lucifer, or after Stanford, or maybe it was even before that, back when they were hunting with their dad and Dean told him to man up, to be less of a baby and more of an adult. He was only fifteen, and it wasn’t fair. Nothing in Sam’s life has ever been fair.
But now he’s a dog, and even if Dean can’t believe he just said that. Â
Dog Sam lets Dean take care of him. He lets Dean give him a bath, lets him scratch his ears and lets Dean hold him in his arms whenever he wants.
Dog Sam is happy, too. He finds happiness in the most elementary things.
When Dean got him a steak, a whole steak, Sam yelped with happiness and licked his face.
When Dean took him to the park, he ran like his life depended of it and rolled in the grass.
When they got in the Impala, watching Sam with his tongue out as he sticks his head out the window is something Dean won’t forget anytime soon.
Dog Sam is happy, but he doesn’t replace Dean’s brother.
He doesn’t say anything when Dean leaves the empty bottles of beer on the floor.
He doesn’t complain when Dean doesn’t change his shirt for a couple of days – In fact, he even seems to love it more, sniffing him like it’s the best thing ever.
He doesn’t talk, doesn’t reply to Dean, doesn’t kiss him and doesn’t do any of the things that make him Sam.
“One more night” Dean says, holding Sam close to his chest. He used to hate dog smell, but he will make an exception for Sam – He always does.
Sam licks his hand in response, and soon, Dean can hear his soft breathing.
Dean doesn’t sleep right away. There’s only a few hours before Sam turns back, and the fear of what's coming is too much for him to sleep.
What if Sam doesn’t turn back? What if he’s stuck like this, forever? What if he never see Sam's bitchy face again or hear his stupid laugh again? Fuck, he misses that laugh. And he misses his smile, too. He misses everything, even his bratty comments.
As the days went by, he noticed how Sam slowly started losing his human traits. He’s not even sure Sam still can understand him, and that scares him the most. What if he already lost Sam, but he doesn’t know it?
With this last thought, Dean finally closes his eyes, hoping to wake up next to his brother.
Sam isn’t there when he opens his eyes, not in his human form, but not in his dog form either.
“Sam?” Dean yells, getting up.
He starts by checking the trash, knowing that for the last couple of days Sam had found a particular interest in eating it, but the bags are still intact. He moves to the bathroom, but once again, Sam isn’t there.
Dean starts to panic – What if the spell ended, but instead of turning back into a human, Sam simply disappeared? He shouldn’t have trusted that stupid book. He should have do some more research, should have make a deal with whoever so they would turn Sam back. He should have-
“Hey” Sam says, closing the door after him
“Sam” Dean breathes out
“That’s me” He laughs “Did you miss me?”
“You son of a bitch” He says, running toward Sam and pulling him in his arms “Never, ever do that again, you hear me?”
He needs to lift himself up from the ground to reach Sam’s lips, and while it used to annoy him before, it comforts him now. Sam is here. His Sam is here. And he’s not on all fours anymore. Well, for now at least.
“I thought I lost you” He whispers, his forehead against Sam’s
“Yeah well, I thought you lost me, too”
“You still smell like dog, through” Dean grimaces
Sam laughs, throwing his head back beautifully and Dean’s heart skips a beat. He missed that. He missed that so fucking much.
“What about a shower together? You know, so I can be sure you're washed correctly”
“I mean, if you need to be sure…” Sam answers, licking his lips before dropping a kiss on Dean’s lips. “Hey, you think we could go eat a steak after?”
“Yeah, I think we can do that” Dean smiles, holding Sam’s hand.
