rant 1:

fagin really is just one of the best complex characters written on the entire show. the scene where he takes the organ music, and is able to admit that he did jack wrong and that it does haunt him? it’s so well written bc while fagin does feel bad he knows that he will hurt jack in the future again for his own goals. it makes him such a complex character bc he asks god to watch over jack, but then immediately covers it up with “i need him.” he shows that he cares about jack in a complicated and non-conventional way, but he’s also using him to his own ends and consistently showing a lack of compassion and actual understanding of jack and his feelings. he gets so close to being a good person, and then he throws it all away for the sake of more money, more power, the feeling of being in control. fagin lacks control over jack, over money, over everything. he fights for leverage and for himself.

fagin pisses me off but he’s such a good character and manipulator

rant 2:

the amount of feeling put into “i was 13 years old and you left me in a cell!” is INSANE. the pain, the way his accent thickens because he’s this close to breaking down.

“i’m asking for your help now!” and you can just hear the ragged edges of his voice, the memories pulling on the ends of his words.

and you can see the way that fagin is still fucking manipulating him by making that story up about agnes and conveniently leaving out the fact that agnes is a dog and not a little girl. he preys on jacks weakness and ability to empathize with people unlike sneed, and it works. fagin can keep jack in his grasp and use him for his own ends, judy like before. and even if he does truly believe what he says, he still uses it to get inside jacks head and start pulling him in the direction he apparently needs to be in.

and the saddest thing about this is that jack does ultimately end up letting fagin in again. he jokes around, he uses him for his schemes with belle, he lets fagin get him out of prison, all because he is so much more forgiving with him bc he occasionally will save jacks ass. and it sucks bc you, as an audience member, know fagin can’t be trusted, know that he’s scheming behind jacks back to get them all out of port victory, knows that he uses belles connection with danny in season two to get what he wants AGAIN.

honestly yeah overall, he sucks, but again, he does try to do good things for jack or the team ON OCCASION. it honestly represents something that i think is a wider problem which is that we are a lot more forgiving of bad people who do good things occasionally than a good person who does bad things occasionally, like fagin v. belles mother. on pinterest especially, i see a lot of unforgiving rude things written about belles mother despite her being a mostly good person with valid legitimate reasons to not like jack or trust him. however, despite fagin being a horrible person to belle, jack, aputi, flashbang, and fanny, despite being a manipulating, lying bitch, people praise him, think he’s funny, laugh at his dumb jokes like he’s only there for comedic relief when in fact, he’s there to represent the larger problem that jack has which is trusting too easily. he’s too loyal, he wears his heart on his sleeve, and gets attached to people way too fast.

genuinely this is how i feel about him rn:

it just represents so much of the confusion jack feels over belle and his feelings toward her. she's knitted up his soul, and hes confused over why he feels this way towards her.
