Docking Bay, Ken Le Bras
I took a shift as a docking guide today.
The docking crew lost a worker—she got married and moved to Bajor VIII. So the night shift filled in.
Being a docking guide involves moving objects around under the orders of the docking master, whose official title I don’t know. Docking guides have to keep a mental map of the locations of all the temporary stuff in the docking bay. When a ship with a lot of passengers docked, I got to bring people to their quarters instead of counting cargo and schlepping crates.
Docking guides do more interacting with people and working in teams. The general “night shift” is a solitary job with more varied activities—odd jobs, cleaning, routine maintenance, and helping lost people find their quarters or meeting rooms.
