Terminology Thursday: DNW (Do Not Want)
This Terminology Thursday, we’re looking at the term “DNW” or “Do Not Want”.
It’s most often used in the context of fanfiction or fanart exchanges as an undetailed way to refer to things one wishes not to receive, read, or view. It’s an abbreviation that can be used as a a broad and nonjudgmental way avoid specific topics or tags without indicating anything about one’s general opinion on the subject, unlike triggers or squicks.
A DNW could be used for things a recipient doesn’t like, works they’re tired of receiving, or because they only want to read that specific thing written along with other tags, and therefore opt not to want it at all in the context of the exchange.
DNWs have seen some wank, because only requesting specific things may be seen as a way to “game the system”.
