"Make Me" DMC music lore analysis
So, I found another song which you can find it here. This time, it relates to the one and only. Nero's mother or Lady in Red (LiR)
The whole song is very sad as this is the perspective of LiR.
Not gonna lie, after reading this. I'm already convince LiR is our Kurosaki Masaki of DMC. This will be hard so, I will really try to analyze. I will make another post for parallels but, very spoiler for BLEACH
Thereā²s a bridge I must walk
But I fear I'll never cross
Where angels fear to tread
Another lore info, but its hard currently given there is no new canon lore. Let's just break it down
Thereā²s a bridge I must walk
But I fear I'll never cross
It was hinted in the Deadly Fortune novel that currently Mundus is in-between the Human and Demon World. We don't know where that place is given Dante re-sealed Mundus to god knows where
Where angels fear to tread
It's hard to tell given that there is no literal heavenly angels in DMC as Itsuno literally debunked the whole idea of what could be described as people wanted... Christian angels. The game is strictly Human vs Demon
In canon lore, angels are just demons in disguise pretending to be angels.
It was hinted where Mundus was born in the manual of DMC1
Another interpretation for this verse is.. well.. LiR is in a verge of death and entering into a purgatory state.
Well... dear reader. Heaven in DMC is another word for Hell or the Demon World. I talked about it in-depth regards to it
Another a scrap concept idea that can be seen in DMC5 Artbook
But ordinary people don't know that especially, in canon DMC universe
The best way that a soul is in a purgatory state is... If said soul still has lingering problem/s need to be solved in the Human World. As you can see in Madhouse 2007 DMC Anime Episode 7: Wishes Come True
In the night we werenā²t alone
The promise of a last breath
Now has me hanging by a golden thread
This is interesting... There is a place somewhere where LiR and Vergil are not really alone, yet they know the place if you take it literally
The promise of a last breath
Now has me hanging by a golden thread
The golden thread refers to the Greek Mythology, as there are two myths:
first is Ariadne's thread and
second The Threads of Fate
In Greek myth, it talks about the three sisters (the Moirai or Fates) weaving a mortal or divine's fate or destiny.
Clotho - spun the thread of life which is birth
Lachesis - measured the thread of life, which are the ups and downs of one's own lived-in experience
Athropos - the cutter of the thread of life which is death
The Threads of Fate make sense. Why?
It connects her saying "last breath", "me hanging by a golden thread", and the chorus
Which can be interpreted as she is hanging between life and death.
Burning all the fears away
Washing all the stains away
This is a very Kurosaki Masaki vibe.. Literally
It make sense as she sees or thinks her soul was "tainted" since she love the eldest son of Sparda who is half-demon that she feels it's unforgiven. There's no ill-will just the reality of how her worldview for humanity sees it.
Her saying "Pour the gasoline" was a metaphor to both extinguishing pain for herself and Vergil taking actions that will make it an argument and a problem as a foreshadowing.
Which is him (Devil Moon) literally doing it.. "With strength, I will go on"
Make the rain come
Make the pain numb
Washing all the stains away
This part talks about the rain symbolizing despair and sorrow.
While "making the pain numb", and "washing all the stains" hints of her being badly wounded. Thinking that the rain will wash all her blood.
This is an image of her dying in the rain.
This connects to Devil Moon which is.. "I've seen angels fall"
Like Eva, Vergil's sees LiR like an angel having an angel-like personality.
Like Eva, LiR was killed by demons
and guess who ordered it?
There used to be a light inside
There were fields of green
Lakes calm, serene... so much beauty to describe
The whole verse is a symbolism and thematic meaning of what LiR thinks about humanity. As humanity is another meaning of Light in DMC, besides a literal light.
Humanity once existed strongly within her heart. She felt connected to people, hope, compassion, and the human spirit. She never felt the need to suppress those feelings. Her humanity was something she could openly embrace rather than conceal.
Green fields symbolize life, growth, vitality, and the simple beauty of the human world.
The peaceful lakes represent tranquility, emotional stability, and harmony. An idealized image of humanity at its best.
She remembers finding countless reasons to admire humanity, seeing wonder and value in the human world.
Yet, at some point it was changed since she said "There used to be". Which is how it connects to what humanity could do when a person wanted more power... To become a God just because of them wanting demonic power in exchange for their humanity.
But then a prince came with a blackened
And spread a poison through these parts
The only remedy is to cross this bridge
Fade the memory of this bondage
This is where you question LiR's mentality at this point. Especially her saying
"But then a prince came with a blackened. And spread a poison through these parts".
Besides her meeting Vergil..
It make sense canonically when it talks about a person learning the existence of demons or related to Sparda
People ended up being in a mental institute
In DMC, it's considered a mental illness thinking demons exist, when the public doesn't know nor believe it and treat it as fictional.
The only way to prevent is to keep it to yourself.
The existence that someone is related to Sparda
Everything related to the Demon World
This is the reason why Dante refuse to talk to a reporter of what really happened when he was a child (Discarded Note DMC5), and Nero regards to Fortuna in Before the Nightmare
This is lore pre-DMC5 just to be clear.
Remember Jessica in DMC1 novel? The eldest of Grue's daughters alongside her siblings Tiki and Nesty?
Jessica was sent to the sanatorium or mental institute as she is hallucinating
Another hint... Remember what Nico said regarding The Legend of Sparda?
I can imagine what Mama'd say if I told her I partnered up with a bonafide descendant of Sparda. She'd have me strapped up in a straightjacket, for sure!
Nico saying "She'd have me strapped up in a straightjacket". She is imagining her own mother Alisa will make Nico wear a straightjacket thinking her own daughter is already insane.
In this verse, we can conclude that the "poison" was in fact her worldview being destroyed. The knowledge itself that demons in fact are real, and that Vergil is in fact a son of Sparda.
Which connects to my analysis in Devil Moon
This contradicts to what the fans think and what the people of Fortuna think of her which is... She's a prostitute and just a one-night stand
There is a reason why Nero fought back as a child. He was told time and time again when he was still an orphan before he was fostered that he is a "bastard child".
He couldn't stand the idea of his own mother is a prostitute. Rumors were started from adults, then passed down to their own child until, he was bullied by those children.
Fortuna as a society made Nero as a social outcast because of this
Burning all the fears away
Washing all the stains away
Asking angels now to stay
I will try to connect the second half of chorus 2 and bridge.
LiR tried to turn the lights on meaning her becoming Vergil's anchor to his humanity. This connects to how Vergil deeply kept his secret love to her which is him burying it in his chest (Bury the Light)
Beyond the tree
Fire burns
Secret love
Bloodline yearns
Dark minds embrace
Crimson joy
Does your dim heart
Heal or destroy?
But she herself entrusted it to her son, Nero. Like she is asking the universe to not let her son be consumed by darkness fully, to stand tall against darkness
Make the night small
Make the light tall
Asking angels now to stay
She is asking her innocent baby boy to be safe, to stay.
But stay to whom exactly? None other than... Vergil.
There is no ill-will between LiR and Vergil. It's just them longing for each other. She became his center of the universe after Eva died.
For Nero, Vergil currently has a reason. Knowing full well he is his son post-DMC5.
The father and son met physically
Nero and Vergil already met during one of Nero's dreams when he is also in the verge of life and death. It happened twice in the novel.
This goes to show the Cry of the Soul. I talked about why Dadgil is canon in-depth
In short, Vergil first buried his light as deep inside his chest is his love for LiR. He buried it again this time for Nero to show how he really cares for him deeply.
