At the beginning of the year, I agreed to participate in the Wandering Gods activity[1]. My principle is that when it comes to any activities related to local Fujian traditions and customs, I will participate whenever I can.
Firstly, Xilaimian’s website needs a photo like this, so people will feel that by coming to eat here they can experience for themselves the diversity of local people’s customs. Secondly, if we don’t participate in this kind of activity, we will be considered outsiders no matter what, and when the village chief speaks for us, he won’t be able to really say anything.
My superficial understanding of these so-called “Wandering Gods” is that people will wear a “shell” to put on the appearance of a local god and go out in the streets singing and dancing. At the front, they set off firecrackers. At the back, there is an incense burner placed on the sedan chair and in the middle, there are countless local “gods” walking with firm steps. The entire procession needs to circle around the villages and towns twice.
In my opinion, this a ceremony to let all the gods walk around and investigate the streets in order to drive away every household’s demons and ghosts. Wherever the gods find any raging sinister appearance, after they pass by it will be easily resolved.
The shell of the Wandering Gods is exquisitely made out of colourful cloth, and the god is also made very big. It’s around two meters high and as wide as the width of three people, but the inside is plaited bamboo, so the whole thing is very light. The three of us were covered by it once we got inside, but because the feet needed to be exposed, it was essentially three meters tall. It was a really lofty god; very tall and as wide as three people. Moreover, the head and the shoulders were made very big—so tall and sturdy that it was like a giant—but for its feet there was no alternative; these were still our own feet. The slender legs of three regular people, shoulders as wide as three people and a huge god’s head as wide as three heads—it was a little similar to a cartoon person. In fact, it was a bit comical.
My wandering god was a beaked thunder god. Menyouping’s was a red-clothed, red-faced bearded god, whose back was stuck full of flags. That one was particularly tall. On its head there was a half-meter crown, and on the crown, there were gorgeous red spheres of fire and flowers. On the top of the crown, there were also two huge peacock feathers sticking out and moving back and forth, just like the two root hairs of Sun Wukong[2].
Pangzi’s should be the god of wealth, a white-bearded old man. At first glance, the guan[3] on his head was the god of wealth’s guan, similar to Cao Guojiu[4]’s, but Pangzi’s wandering god was covered from head to toe in colourful lightbulbs. When night fell, all of them were turned on and it looked like a hundred brilliant cars festooned for celebration.
That day, under the guidance of the village chief, the three of us walked down the street armed to the teeth. The people passing by all stuck incense on us, and soon we turned into walking incense burners.
The most interesting thing about the wandering god is its two arms, which are fake hands made of wood. While we were walking, these two fake hands would swing back and forth inside the clothes if you turned the waist. This swinging posture makes no personal considerations and has a rather commanding presence.
After it was finished, we returned to the ancestral hall and obtained a bowl of vegetable noodles from inside the ancestral hall, which can be considered as a day’s accomplishment.
While eating the noodles, Pangzi asked in a mumbling voice: “The previous year’s passed. Tianzhen, what are your wishes and desires for the new year?”
I was unbearably hungry, and I had already eaten everything except for some noodles at the bottom of the bowl. I dug through what was left and said: “This year… I don’t know. I think nothing is lacking. If there is really something I want… then I want some good luck?”
“怎么说?”
“What do you mean?”
“就是,想遇到的事轻松点儿。”我苦笑。
“I simply want the things we encounter to be a little more relaxed.” I smiled wryly.
“That’s good. If you want money, then it might be tiring and difficult to earn money. If you want to be healthy, then you might be poor in the future. The heavens really make things difficult[5]. If that’s what you want, then that’s good. You want good luck—then whatever you want to do, you can do it without complications.”
I nodded and drunk the noodle broth as well. I glanced at all the wandering gods all arranged in order together at the side, cupped my hands together and bowed to pay my respects.
May good luck come again and again this year.
Pangzi also bowed and repeated: “May good luck come again and again.”
Then I glanced at Menyouping. He had eaten half of his noodles. I told him: “Xiaoge, do you also want to strive for us to have a streak of good luck next year?”
Menyouping looked at me. Suddenly, we heard the village chief shout: “There is a lottery for the Wandering Gods Assembly this time! I’ll draw the most fortunate of our zealous wandering gods! It’s already been disclosed—altogether, six people. The first one—Wu Xie!”
I was dumbfounded. I had never won a lottery before. Menyouping had a smile that was not quite a smile on his face and threw a meaningful glance at the village chief’s direction, as if he wanted me to go and claim the prize.
I turned my head and stood up. Everyone was applauding. Someone brought out the prize—it was a big bundle of cash.
“Wu Xie, you’ve won the prize of our local ancestral hall as an outsider. This means our ancestral hall’s forefathers approve of you. Wu Xie, is there something you want to say?” The village chief asked.
I took the cash, raised a hand and held the village chief tightly with the other. “I’m not very good at talking, so I’ll just do a dance that’s popular on the internet.”
Everyone laughed.
I feel the money that I’ve got in my hands. Good luck also has a bit of weight.

Happy new year, I wish everyone an auspicious and lucky Year of the Dragon.
[1] This is the only link I found talking about it in English, so here’s also the Baidu page; basically this is a new year’s activity native to the south of China (Guangdong and Fujian mostly) where people go to the temple and carry out the god in a sedan chair to accept the people’s incense and prayers and bless them.
[2] Sun Wukong is a main character in “Journey to the West”.
[3] Formal form of headwear; you’ve no doubt seen one if you’ve watched even one historical cdrama. Wikipedia page for your convenience.
[4] He’s one of the eight immortals of Chinese legends. Here is his Baidu page, and here is his Wikipedia page.
[5] What he’s actually saying, 卡bug, is video game slang for when a game bugs and players take advantage of it. An explanation here
Tibetan Sea Opera is a part of the 2017 Tomb Robbery Notes: Reboot series, mainly telling the story of Wang Zanghai from Tomb Robbery Notes. It was first published on the Nanpai Sanshu’s Weibo; it’s listed here separately to make it easier for the fans to read.
i've translated all the four little extras npss wrote about zang wanghai (which exist in the raws website; link above) since i noticed that they're not on merebear's website, and i will be posting them as different posts here on tumblr. translations are all by me, with all my hsk5-approximate knowledge so they are not a cleaned up MTL, but an actual translation. that said, if someone knows better chinese than me (very easy to do) and thinks that some of my translation choices are weird or incorrect, feel free to tell me about it! links to each extra at the bottom of this post; and if anyone wants a pdf of all of them together, you can dm me here or on discord.
Translator’s Note:
I’m putting the title down as “Tibetan Sea Drama” but that’s actually not entirely accurate, because it leaves out the last character, 麟. I’m not actually sure how to translate the title in a way that gets across the pun that I’m guessing NPSS was making so I’ll just explain it.
藏海 means ‘Tibetan Sea’ and it’s the same characters from the Tibetan Sea Flower book (aka 藏海花). Additionally, it is also Wang Zanghai’s actual name. As a verb, 戏 means “to play” and as a noun it means “drama; play; show”. 麟 is translated in all my dictionaries as “female unicorn”, but it’s the second character of 麒麟 | Qilin. So as is typical of NPSS, the title is punny and metaphorical with a double-layer meaning that I don’t think can ever get across properly in English.
Wang Zanghai was by the edge of the agate pool. The clear water of this snow-capped mountain watered the stone beach, and underneath it was full of agate goose eggs[1] that had been formed by the lashing of the turbulent currents, which were just like kaleidoscopes[2] under the bright sunset glow. A young man wearing white clothes was standing in the pond looking at him. He didn’t know when he came into the courtyard, but his shadow was reflected by the red clouds of the sunset glow.
He remembered that this young man had seven fingers in his left hand. It was said that he came here from the Western regions[3] in order to ask him for a divine tree. He had made this young man wait more than a year, and it seemed that he couldn’t wait any longer, so he thought of a way to get in. He also didn’t know who he bribed to achieve that.
Hence, he coughed. The young man with the seven fingers turned his head to look at Wang Zanghai and seemed that he wanted to say something, but Wang Zanghai coldly interrupted him and said: “Have you washed your feet?”
[1] I think NPSS might mean “pebbles, stones” here, but I’m not sure so I just gave a more literal translation.
[2] Literal definition is “thousand flower mirrors” which is why I translated this as kaleidoscopes, seeing as the alternative definition all the dictionaries I consulted had was “presbyopic glasses” (an abbreviation for 老花镜)
[3] The Western Regions was a historical name that referred to the regions west of the Yumen Pass, most often the Tarim Basin in present-day southern Xinjiang and Central Asia. More info here

When Wuma Nansheng transferred from the Brocade Uniform Guard[3] to the Divine Tree Division, he certainly didn’t know that he would change from his position as the emperor’s eyes, hands and eagle claws[4] to a tree planter. He also didn’t know that the rest of his life he would follow and develop an inextricable relation with a pretentious liar who was obsessed with making beautiful clothes for himself, taking care of his hair, and powdering his face[5]. Even more, he didn’t know that in this life, his arch-nemesis would be a chatterbox who had to say a few thousand words per hour and laughed at the smallest things.
He didn’t know that Wang Zanghai chose him only because his name happened to coincide with “Red beans grow in the south[6]”; such a boring reason.
[1] The word for division/department here refers specifically to a department under a ministry, so it’s an official, court-related thing probably.
[2] I think this entire passage is metaphorical, I have no idea what the Divine Tree or the grass here refers to.
[3] The Embroidered-Uniform Guard, or otherwise Brocade Uniform Guard, was a Mind Dynasty tribunal; an imperial bodyguard and secret police force of the Ming emperors.
[4] I’m not entirely sure what “从皇帝眼手鹰爪之位” is meant to mean here so take that sentence with a grain of salt. I think it might be that his position was indispensable to the emperor before, or simply that he worked sorely for the emperor’s benefit.
[5] I agonized on how to translate this entire goddamn paragraph, but for context, according to Baidu: 【神棍是指假托鬼神、耍弄手法的骗子。 | Divine Stick refers to someone who pretends to be a supernatural being and engages in cheating techniques. IRL it also refers to some people who like to pretend they are profound and make something unnecessarily complicated.” 】
[6] This is a line from Wang Wei’s Tang dynasty poem, “Yearning | 相思”: 【红豆生南国,春来发几枝 | red beans grow in the south, when spring comes, they grow a few branches. 】The characters 南nan生sheng are the same as those in this guy’s name.

“我们张家人,最重要的品质就是口才,如果身为张起灵,连话都讲不利索,那么张家真的会没落。”
“The most intrinsic quality for us members of the Zhang family is eloquence. In the capacity of Zhang Qiling, if even the words he speaks aren’t distinct and orderly, then the Zhang family will really decline.”
During the twelfth year of the Hongwu reign[1], it’s said that the Zhang Qiling of that generation wasn’t the same as those in the past. He established great aspirations to change the closed-off manner of the Zhang family, and actively entered society. In the end, the existence of the Zhang family was discovered by Wang Zanghai, and it later led to disputes that extended as long as a few centuries.
This particular fact has not been examined afterwards. Only in Zhang Haike’s chat can one learn of a few parts of this unofficial history.
[1] Hongwu reign, from 1368 to 1398, is the reign of the Hongwu Emperor, Zhu Yuanzhang (朱元璋), the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). He was known 明太祖 | Ming Taizu after his death.
After the newly fallen rain on the invisible mountain, the weather entered into autumn somewhat tardily. Under the drizzle, Wang Zanghai silently opened the urgent letter sent by the commander of Duogandu thousands of miles away. The pine trees in the courtyard outside emitted a faint fragrance. The urgent letter arrived riding on a quick horse accompanied by sand. There wasn’t enough time to brush clean the sand carried by the wind, and it was blown into the tea-bowl next to him, making him furrow his brows. The maidservant behind him was applying the tea powder to his long hair[1] for him, but he silently grabbed the girl’s hand.
“这打西边来的风沙都沾着几朝的血,不要涂到我的头发上去。”
“This sand from the west blown in by the wind is wet with several days’ worth of blood, don’t put it on my hair.”
The maidservant stilled her hands, flustered. “Does Duke Wang think that it’s ominous[2]?”
Wang Zanghai said lightly: “No, I think it’s dirty.”

[1] Yes, that’s a thing; you put the powder to take care of your hair apparently. To my understanding there are different benefits depending on which tea powder you use. It honestly took me so long to make sense of this sentence.
[2] The exact translation of this word is “not clear”, “without much detail”, but I had no idea how to put that in English in a way that made sense so.
