Top 10 DKC moment. The original rolling mechanic from the SNES games is still so fun. You know that level from Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze where you just bounce on enemies? It's called Bopopolis. We need a level like that but for rolling!
Has anyone ever come up with a Watsonian explanation for the second Enguarde in Coral Capers? Because I’d love to see it.
Thoughts on the DKC trilogy
Back in the mid 90s, the SNES Donkey Kong Country games were super popular. As a kid in those days I played through 1 which I thought at the time was pretty meh, and 3 which I liked quite a bit. The biggest difference between the two for me was absence or presence of Dixie Kong. I really liked playing as her and she had access to my favorite mechanic in these games, her hair-spin slow fall. For those of you who aren’t in the know Dixie is in DKC 2 & 3 but not 1. Most of the reviews and opinions i heard on the series from friends and others ranked the games in order of greatness: 2>1> 3. About a month ago I started playing 2 for the first time and after finishing it (102%) I played through 3 again. After doing this I have to say I’ve revised more order from 3>1 to 2>3>1. I wasn’t expecting DKC 2 to beat out my nolstagia. Difficulty-wise there’s a world of difference between 2 and 3. 2 is a lot more challenging, If I were to rate the overall difficulty of the game including the Lost World stages by comparing it to other 2D platformers, I’d say I found it about as challenging as Act Raiser 2 or Megaman 1, but with an overall more even progression. There multiple stages that I was stuck on for several tries, and one (The barrel infused lost stage “Klobber’s Karnage”) that I struggled with for over a week. In contrast, 3 is about as tough as Super Mario World. Most of the game is a cakewalk with only a handful of stages that took me more than one life to get through (the most challenging for me was the probably the stage with the lightning strikes: “Lightning Look-Out”).The same holds true for the secrets in both games: I had trouble finding about 10 of the Kremlin coins in 2 and had to look up a guide. Whereas in 3 The only thing I wasn’t able to find without a guide was a single Banana Bird. I felt that DKC 1 was about as easy as 3, but it has been over a decade since I’ve played it and I have no plans of ever picking it up again. A final thought on difficulty, fuck DKC2′s “Slime Climb” stage. This was the only stage out of both games where I struggled due to what seemed like poorly conveyed mechanics.
In terms of characters, their differences play out very differently in each game. In DKC2 Diddy can run, jump (horizontally), and climb faster than Dixie, on the other hand Dixie has hair-spin and a smaller hitbox while running (she could run under some bee hazards which Diddy could not). in DKC3, Dixie and Kiddy seem to have the same movement speed. Kiddy can break certain objects and take out certain enemies that Dixie can’t (in DKC 1 terms, he’s like Donkey and Dixie’s like Diddy). Dixie has hair-spin. I didn’t notice any differences in terms of their hitboxes, but maybe there are some that I missed. In either case, it didn’t make too much difference to me. I like to play Dixie. I don’t like to play Diddy or Kiddy. In either game I can play as her and that sums up the main reason I prefer both games over DKC 1. In terms of graphics I don’t have a whole lot to say. I prefer DKC2 over 3 in terms of enemies. I terms of environments I rank them DKC2>DKC3>DKC1. 1 is basically a boring jungle. 2 has some very interesting environments like the Kremland amusement park and the Ghostly Grotto. 3 has industrial environments mixed in like factories, laboratories, and ducts. What 3 does a lot better than 1 is the Overworld map. I like everything better about DKC3′s map, from the music, to the exploration elements, to the overall look. Speaking of music, I have to give it over once again to DKC2 which has several fantastic tracks. The music in DKC2 has a tendency to be slow and brooding, while the music in DKC3 is mostly upbeat and quick. The only song that beats out DKC2 in a direct comparison is the world map theme. The only song that I feel approaches the quality of the better songs in DKC3 (Sticky Brush Symphony, Gloomy Gulch, Kaptain K’Roole’s boss theme) is the music that plays in “Fire-Ball Frenzy.” and the other factory stages. Are there any gameplay elements that I feel DKC3 does better than 2? Sure. First off, there’s no fucking Banana Coins. This means you don’t have to waste time collecting coins to save your game after beating a stage you were stuck on, or pay Funky for transportation to a different location on the map (Banana Coins are not saved with your game data so whenever you load a game you start with 0). You also never run into the situation of having to to re-fight a boss, because you got thrown into the next region afterwards and weren’t able to make it to the next Kong College to save before running out of lives. DKC3 actually saves the currency that you earn in that game, you don’t have to spend it to save, and you can always freely revisit any area in the world map. DKC2 tries to find a weird balance between Super Mario Bros. 3 (no saving and no way to return to early worlds of the game) and Super Mario World (unlimited saving and back tracking) that I really dislike compared to the extremes. So yeah, after finally playing DKC2 for the first time and replaying DKC3, I do prefer DKC2 much to my surprise. That said, I wouldn’t rank either game amongst my favorite platformers and there are aspects of 3 that I believe get one over on 2.
apparently the super nintendo classic's copy of dkc1 doesn't have the secret oil drum alley bonus area. i did it with the one banana like you're supposed to, and then i used the barrel on the bonus area wall but diddy did his hat toss triumph and the bonus ended. i restarted and did it again and the same thing happened. so i reset and lost 75 lives for nothing...
(edit: i haven't tried again yet but apparently that bonus room has always been glitched and you have to jump at the wall not run at it)

Thanks for the advice, guys.
Horror Games
Horror video games are all good and well, but they’ll never be able to equal the terror of that one level in Donkey Kong Country where you’re in that dark coal mine with the red lamps and those Harryhausen fuckers come after you whenever the lamps turn green.
