— Hey anon! Thanks for sending in this request!! God, I love this fandom so much and it is putting me in such a nostalgic mood lately. I captured DJ as well as I could- I really hope you like how it turned. Of course, feel free to send in another request if you enjoyed this or any of my other work! (guidelines for requests at bottom)
this was a request made by an anon
Unless you're incredibly forthcoming with your feelings, be prepared for a slowww burn
This boy was too nervous to jump the cliff in the first episode of TDI and he was anxious enough to believe a curse he made up in TDWT
I just know his fight or flight acts up just as hard at the idea of confessing as it would in a shark attack
Really, you couldn't believe it when DJ confessed. He was always nice, of course, but he was nice to everyone! Maybe his constant presence at your side was a sign. The way he always lent you a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on— support. Even still, as he stood in front of you, an awkward mess of nerves, you thought back on your relationship. You'd known DJ for so long. Liked him for so long. His feelings may have been a shock, but they certainly weren't unwelcome.
Early on in the relationship, he's constantly calling people to ask questions
Specifically his momma or just friends who have more experience with relationships
What anniversaries do I need to remember? What gift is appropriate for this? How soon is too soon to move in together? To talk about the future? To kiss, even?
This is a habit that lessens as he becomes more secure in the relationship and more used to dating you but I don't think it ever completely goes away
You trudged into the living room but you lightened your steps as you heard DJ on a call. Intending to give him space, you turned away but in the space behind you, you heard your name. Just a glimpse into the room told you that, no, he hadn't noticed you were there. Instead, he seemed to have been talking about you. If he had a problem, you were sure he would just talk to you about it— he always made it clear that communication was important to him. And so, rather than eavesdropping, you took your leave. Months later, as he surprised you with a perfect birthday, you were oblivious to how close you'd come to ruining the day's surprise.
Definitely shows love through acts of service and quality time
He's grown up with his mother. He's a such a momma's boy that he even mentioned her in his audition, so you can 100% bet that he was constantly at her side.
As she got older, I'd imagine he slid into a caretaker role for her. He helped to do all the things that she might not have been able to do so well anymore.
In the end, that idea of caring for those who meant a lot to you became central to his vision of love.
As for the most effective ways to show him love? I'd say words of affirmation, and again, quality time.
I repeat, he's somewhat an anxious person so I imagine that he might need occasional reassurance and what is a more blatant method of reassuring someone than using your words?
As for spending time together, it's a physical piece of proof that you care for him— that you love him and that there's no emptiness between your words
DJ glanced across the couch, a bowl held firmly in one hand and a spoon in the other. You were perched on the other end, pulled into yourself— not in a reserved manner but rather, comfortable. It was only a moment before you noticed his gaze, peering at him with your eyes a bit wide. Distantly, he thought you resembled Bunny with your cheeks full and rounded by the food in your mouth. He smiled softly, content finding home in even hollows of his bones. With a tilt, you seemed to question what he was thinking but he dismissed it, shaking his head. You didn't need to question him further. He would tell you if something was wrong. And so, you returned his smile, equally gentle and genuine by nature of your relationship, before turning back to face the tv.
DJ is most definitely the type to have his mother move in when he owns his own place
When he's younger— in University or in the early days of working, is when your most likely to have a place to yourself with him. An apartment on the smaller side that isn't terribly high maintenance
As a working adult, however? One who can pay a mortgage and owns a house he expects to live in long-term? His momma is moving in with him.
IN FACT, I think that he works best with a partner who actively likes his mother. I think the relationship will be fine as long as you can be civil and don't hate his mom but someone who loves her has a better chance in this relationship.
The laugh practically ripped out of you, loud and boisterous— that was what called his attention. DJ turned the corner, sights setting on where you stood next to his mother, hands coated thickly in flour and half-mixed dough. He leaned into the doorframe, grinning ear-to-ear as you seemed to run out of air, wheezing into the crook of your arm. You cursed, ducking your head and leaning into the counter for support. Weightlessly, DJ rolled up his sleeves and entered the kitchen to join the pair of you. You seemed to hardly even notice him, only offering a half-hearted wave as your undivided attention stayed with him momma. Honestly, it seemed as if you were starting to like her better than you did and him and that— that thought made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
I can't imagine DJ as the kind of person to be big on pet names. Just out of feeling as if they're awkward rolling off the tongue and feeling out of place when he uses them.
We've seen him participate in bullying Harold in TDI when he was with Duncan and Geoff so he can definitely be somewhat mean or teasing, even if it isn't intended to be mean spirited— so possibly a nickname birthed from an embarrassing moment
I also think he'd call you dude or bro in like a casual, non-serious way— though he'd be mindful if you show that you're clearly against it
"Dude, did you take my sweater?" DJ's confused voice echoed from the closet, loud and out of breath. He poked half-way out the door, clearly sweating. "I checked everywhere!" His eyes were wide, settling on you as he huffed with exhaustion. The silence between you grew, making DJ squint at you in suspicion. As you pursed your lips, guilt written across your face, he sighed. "…Is it in your closet then?"
In public, I don't think he would get incredibly touchy or that he completely hates it. PDA is more something that he doesn't mind and he only really does if he feels the urge.
Touch is something very casual between the two of you. You might slip your hand into his or hold onto his sweatshirt. He might lean into you when your sitting next to each other. You might adjust how the seams of his shirt fit on his shoulders. All of it is fine and natural— not constant or forced but just completely natural
Physical touch happens more often when its just the two of you. A head resting on a lap, a kiss on the cheek, a leg thrown over your own at night.
Your boyfriend laid across the couch, his legs going over the far end and his head on your lap. He stared up at his phone, snickering as the same sound looped for the fifth time. "Yo, look at this!" DJ nudged you, tilting the screen toward you. Though, before you could so much as glance at it, it slipped from his hands, falling square on his nose. He cursed, shooting up and clutching his nose, completely disregarding the way his phone fell to the ground. "Goddammit-" He huffed, not turning back even as you laughed at his misery.
The most dependable man
Day or night, a strong set of hands or a steady shoulder to lean on, rain or shine, work be fucking damned— DJ is there for you.
You are a priority for him. You are not a priority because you asked to be or because you need him but because he loves you. He loves you and god, he wants to be there for you.
"Can you come home? I… need help." You worried that maybe you were bothering him. He could have been busy— probably was, so why the hell were you pestering him over a bit of stress? Or maybe he would ask a bunch of follow-up questions. Wouldn't that be worse? You didn't think you could speak much more in your current state. Though, the questions never came. Just a soft, reassuring, "I'm on way." Maybe he heard the sorrow calling from your heart. Maybe your throat was raw from cries no one was around the hear. Or maybe, he just felt that you needed him. Either way, he came.
