It was a weeknight when Ben left, a Wednesday I think it was.  We had just come back from seeing our relationship councilor and finally reached the conclusion that our marriage was over.  He packed his things and left.  I shared my bed with my son, and nuzzled into his baby skin.  He would be two in a few weeks.  I didn’t cry that night.  I had cried so much leading up to this day that I had managed a laceration in my eye from all the eye-rubbing.  Going to sleep wasn’t a problem, it was the next morning however that I recall vividly.

When I opened my eyes I saw white walls, white wardrobe doors, a white vanity, even my doona cover was white.  I felt empty.  Like something very fundamental had died and I couldn’t see any future.  I had wanted a lot of things in my life time, but getting married, sharing my life with someone, creating a family; it had somehow become pivotal to my existence.  I was a romantic, I believed the fairy tales, I believed that people got married and lived happily ever after.

For three months I tried to be Ok, but it was Ok because everyone expected me to be sad and so I was and it was fine.  Also, I expected that I would slowly start to come to life again somehow, and sure enough I did.  I made new friends; I threw myself into my fabulous new job.  I walked the streets of the hip suburb I’d moved into and felt like I was in a dream where I had been taken out of one life and transported into a completely new one.  There was not one thing that had stayed constant. 

One day I was walking down the street and I noticed a man. He noticed me. We walked passed each other.  I turned back to look at him. He looked back at the same time.  Hallelujah! I noticed a man. It was January and my womanhood was slowly starting to raise her curious head.  But I had been in a relationship for seven years now and I had forgotten so much about what it felt like to be with someone new.  I couldn’t remember what it was like to fall in love, or to become infatuated, or to experience passion.  Three months out of my marriage I had a game plan.  I would be cold and smart and play hard to get, I would be confident and self-fulfilled and men would naturally flock, right?.  I would fix the emptiness I had felt that morning because I would meet someone else and then all would be fine.

But this plan had a flaw, well several flaws actually.  The first was that I was not cold; I was warm, very, very warm.  The next flaw was that although I pretended to be independent and happily single I wasn’t and the third flaw was that a man would never fix the emptiness.  All a man could do was hide it temporarily until the cracks started to show again.
