A magic system where you can only use magic on things you don’t care about. Wizards are thus employed on a contract where the payout in only minimally connected to their results. Then several wizards are assigned to a problem, and hopefully one of them happens to cast the spell. Thus, the best wizards are disinterested in the world enough that they can use magic, but not so disinterested that they don’t do anything at all. The most magical parts of life are the most trivial because anyone can use magic for the trivial parts of life. Sociopaths are valuable as medical wizards because they don’t really care if their patients live or not. On the other hands, most people prefer normal doctors, because while the medical wizards can cure your illness, sometimes they let you die just for giggles.
