Physical Pain being the Basis for Personal Alterhumanity

Even when I was a part of alterhuman spaces (like in the sense of me actively trying to engage with otherkin, plural, and general alterhuman spaces), I didn’t hear much about the experiences of chronic pain influencing alterhumanity.

There was always the general warning of, “if you experience shifts it’s a good idea to get that physically checked out.” I remember a dragon talking about how their phantom wings were connected to how they experienced back pain. But this appeared to be a relatively uncommon experience, at least since spiritual experiences of nonhumanity seemed to be the most common.

I’ll say for myself - ankle/foot and facial pain can manifest itself as sensations of hooves and horns. I’m not always sure if what I experience in my mouth can be described as pain but a burning sensation around my mouth and discomfort in my gums manifests itself as shifts involving my teeth. When these shifts happen, they feel plausibly real in a way I can’t fully explain.

In a way, a part of me subconsciously engages with the idea that being physically nonhuman is the better explanation here. Not that I’m actually in pain, or that I have a physical ailment of some sort. When I experience and think about (in retrospect) these phantom shifts, there’s an acknowledgment that it simultaneously feels like myself and not myself. Both not human and human.

Because I do often question if what experience is actually painful. I have been driven to question my own experiences to the point I started to question my own reality (and then this isn’t just about chronic pain anymore; it’s about histories of abuse and systemic neglect).
