“We always have a choice: we can limit our perceptions so that we close off vastness, or we can allow vastness to touch us...When we draw down the power and depth of vastness into a single perception, then we are discovering and invoking magic. By magic we do not mean unnatural power over the phenomenal world, but rather the discovery of innate or primordial wisdom in the world as it is. In Tibetan this magical quality of existence, or natural wisdom, is called drala...
One of the key points in discovering drala principle is realizing that your own wisdom as a human being is not separate from the power of things as they are. They are both reflections of the unconditional wisdom of the cosmic mirror...The discovery of drala may come as an extraordinary smell, a fantastic sound, a vivid color, an unusual taste. Any perception can connect us to reality properly and fully. what we see doesn't have to be pretty, particularly; we can appreciate anything that exists. There is some principle of magic in everything, some living quality. Something living, something real is taking place in everything.
When we see things as they are, they make sense to us: the way leaves move when they are blown by the wind, the way rocks get wet when there are snowflakes sitting on them. We see how things display their harmony and their chaos at the same time. So we are never limited by beauty alone, but we appreciate all sides of reality properly.”
― Chögyam Trungpa, Shambala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior (from his chapter on Discovering Magic)
Why do characters discovering new powers always do so in fights? That doesn't seem like much of a place to be introspecting. Show me someone unlocking new mind-death magic in the midst of a breakthrough during therapy.
Show me someone discovering that they can cause untold agony while they're pulling the cinnamon-apple pie out of the oven.
i also love to see wizarding traditions in a fanfic. Recently i tried to find as many well written fanfics about wizarding culture as possible and there aren't that many of them.
BUT.
I found a few .
my favourite so far have been Discovering Magic by Artisticfool on AO3 and BakenandEggs's series Harry Potter in the Claw of the Raven also on AO3.
I love them.
Discovering Magic explores both tradtions and religion of the wizarding world, Harry's discovery and explorations of them, to which i myself very much relate. Sadly, it is unfinished and haven't been updated in a quite long time so i doubt that it will ever be finished. Developing one's own ideas and worldbuilding is harder that exploring what is already present and developed.
Harry Potter in the Claw of the Raven explores pureblood culture in a way that i find both fascinating and very troubling. I can't say that i approve of Harry's adoption of slurs but can also very clearly see how and why he has done so. In this fanfic Harry is not a Golden Boy. He learns about pureblood culture and adopts it, because it gives him a clear structure. I doubt that he would do the same with equal enthusiasm if he wasn't in a very priviledged position that he is. I am sure that he would adopt at least parts of it, the beginning of the story clearly tells us so. It also shows us the inner workings of the politics , how one has to work inside the system to change it, for better or for worse. The best part of it is that it is very long and it is finished!!! This makes me both happy and sad at the same time. I know how it ended but also cannot expect another part. Endings, positive or negative, always bring a touch of sadness for me .
I have just learned that the holey rocks I collect are called hag stones.

With my birthday money I purchased an inexpensive dark green velveteen cloak. I justified the purchase by agreeing to wear it on future Halloweens as part of a witch costume, which is why I bought it, except to wear for a Harry Potter sleepover I am organizing for a group of girls this week. When I got home, I tried it on, and save for taking time to eat supper -very garlicky breadsticks and pizza, I spent the evening searching through my jewelry collection looking for just the right pins, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings to wear with my costume. (On a daily basis, I only wear earrings and my wedding rings, but I have several boxes full of mostly everyday jewelry and sentimental pieces.) I remembered a silver trowel pin that would go perfectly with my character.
I dug through the clutter on my dresser and found three trinket boxes and a crystal bowl covered in a thick layer of dust. (Housekeeping is not my strong suit.) In the handpainted porcelain box that was a bridesmaid present from a dear friend, I found the burgundy drawstring bag that contained several souvenir silver charms, a bracelet that has been waiting 16 years to receive the charms, a silver necklace with more souvenir charms, pins shaped like gardening tools, a silver thimble, a snipped of fabric that I realized was from my wedding dress, a copper enamel piece I made in art class with a clover design, a crystal pendant, an origami cicada, and a casting of my lower jaw.
I decided I needed another drawstring bag to keep some of these things in because although it seemed I had forgotten them, once I saw them again I knew the significance of each. I began searching through my treasure drawer in the dresser for a bag. I found four compact mirrors, three of them in small bags. The third of these mirrors was inside a small paperboard box .tucked at the back of the drawer and completely forgotten. I took the black velveteen bag out of the box and pulled open the string to reveal a heavy engraved mirror with my married initials. I started to cry because I couldn’t remember who had given it to me, but it must have been a wedding gift, perhaps from my uncle who has a penchant for silver things. I wondered if I should put the mirror back in the drawer, but decided I would keep the mirror with the other trinkets in it’s drawstring bag.

Trying this whole listening to classical music as I write business… got to say, it does give you emotions to work with. And after watching the season finale of Doctor Who season 4… I’m already a bit emotional (so don’t mind all the crying.. sorry about…
