Life flashed by in quick glimpses, flickers of illuminated memory shattering the dark before her eyes. Breathe. Breathe. The knife was placed squarely in her heart. She didn’t have much time left. 

Hands shook as she fumbled her phone out of her pocket, flashes revealing the cracked screen, the body on the floor behind it. Dark mist pooled around the edges of her vision, taunting, laughing, present. Her hands trembled as she slowly, painstakingly pressed the numbers for a mobile phone into the dial-pad. Breathe. Breathe.

Her breath grew wet and mucousy as the phone rang, rang. Breathe. Breathe.

Her hands shook some more as the phone rang, rang.

A little click, and a bright voice cut through the raucous silence. “Yes?”

Breathe. Breathe.

She sank back against a wall, blood spilling out the side of her mouth. When she spoke, her voice was wet and raggedy. “Hey, Hoid.”

Instant concern, and a furrowed brow. “Darling? Are you okay?”

She shook her head slightly, though he couldn’t hear it. She breathed, breathed slimy, awful breaths. “Hoid.” His voice was ragged now too. He spoke with the weight of death on his voice. “Yes, my baby.”
