Hey Lace- writing question for you. In your opinion, it is a problem to have a "soft" POV during a single scene? Like, for which character's head you're peeking inside to switch back and forth in way that isn't very clearly defined, but somewhat apparent if you go looking? I'm betaing a work for my buddy and my instinct is to have him make the transitions fewer and more clear, but I wanted a second opinion.
Technically speaking there is no wrong way to write, and if your friend wants to write a floating POV, then that's his perogative and I totally wish him the best of luck!
However, generally speaking, having a "soft" POV in a scene can be bad depending on the POV - if it's first person, third person limited, or second person, then yeah, it's a problem. You're supposed to only be in one head (sometimes two in the case of second person, at times) at a time and there's supposed to be clear scene changes to change POVs.
But if it's third person omniscent, in which the narrator is more like Lemony Snicket with more/less personality/character of their own, then "soft" pov is sort of par for the course. You can head hop all you like.
But head hopping acceptability is largely due to the POV its written in. I'd recommend figuring out his intent one way or the other, either make the transitions less clear and more omniscient, or make them more clear and break the scene at them.
