The Iops race once had a ritual: the bride and groom had to bring a burning candle to the hearth in order to ignite the family fire. Over time, the ritual was simplified - now couples say oaths at the sacred tree, carry a candle to the nearby brazier and light it. The light symbolizes nascent love, and the way to the brazier is how they will carry it through the years. Later, the fire is transferred to the home hearth.
By the way, I suddenly had this idea of a scene: during the ritual walk to the hearth, a gust of wind blows, the candle flame catches Percedal’s gobball cloak, and it starts burning like crazy. But instead of throwing it off and putting it out, he runs to the hearth and lights it WITH HIS OWN CLOAK. And then everyone just laughs, like “okay, that’s a bit too much love,” and the newlyweds go on to live a long and happy life. Iops are insane.
