Okay so Ive found out that there are people who genuinely hate people who like Chloe from MLB and Chloe herself and think it was good her redemption arc was dashed into the mud because...and I quote..."I was bullied/heavily bullied."
....congrats? Condolences? I guess? I dont know?? Thats still a 14 year old who's been neglected and abused by her parents, and her bullying is like....the most nothing burger bullying ever. Legitimately all she does is be a dumb snarky rich kid.
Imo, and im saying this with all due respect, if you have no objective crtitical reasoning for commenting on something, do not comment. Youre contributing nothing to the discourse. Chloe's redemption arc was built up extremely well (atleast by the shows standards) and it being dashed was solely because Thomas, like these people, wouldnt know objectivity if it slapped him in the fucking face. That is an A B U S E D C H I L D. Whether or not marinette forgives her is debatable yes, and thats where that room for productive anecdotal evidence is present ( imo she absolutely should, you cannot tell me she didnt use the power dynamic of ladybug to also be a bully, so she gets not much room to hold it over chloe) but to say an abused barely teenage girl is somehow beyond redemption is genuinely fucking wild. If youre attaching emotions to a show so much, stay out of the discourse on it. Youll annoy the shit out of everyone and raise your own blood pressure.
My point is, "oh I was bullied / oh this happened to me so X happening was bad/good / Y not happening was bad/good is not a fucking critique. Its not an argument for a critique. Thats not how media works. You can't use your singular personal experience as an argument for something being good writing. Chloe's redemption arc being seen till the end wouldve been good writing, because the show had buildup to it. There was no buildup to the rejection of redemption, making the redemption arc suddenly crumbling bad writing. Its not about whether you were fucking bullied or not jfc yea ok so was I big fuckin deal mate! My bullies have changed, they've become better people, so what does that mean every bully has to be redeemed now???? Fuck I was a bully too at some point in my life, and now I'm bsfs with the kid I allegedly bullied (I say allegedly because neither of us remember it, her mom told her and thats how she even knew it happened) You dont see me bullying anyone do you??? Does my anecdotal evidence suddenly mean that not giving every bully a redemption arc is bad writing??
Writing is not morality. You dont make writing decisions based on "oh this is morally correct!" If that was the case then nobody would right anything beyond a slice of life shojo comprised of Mary Sues. Even if hypothetically in some universe the idea that a 14 year old is irredeemable is morally correct, that doesnt....mean...people can't write it??? Hello?? Personal experience is a SUPPLEMENT to objective argument. Not the FOUNDATION of an argument, unless you are a professional talking about your profession. Even then, objectivity is needed.
