This native Rosa canina (dog rose) has become host to the robin's pincushion or bedeguar gall. This abnormal growth by the rose is caused by the larvae of a tiny gall wasp, Dipoloepis rosae. Each gall holds many larvae, which feed on the gall plant tissue throughout the winter and emerge in spring as adults. The gall is not harmful to the rose in the long term.
