So the San Jose Old Spaghetti Factory is a huge pain in the ass, and, long story short, I wasnāt able to get a reservation. (This is after previous years where theyāve lost my reservation, and this year, they wouldnāt let me make a reservation until it was full. But thatās beside the point.)
Iām trying to find alternatives, and so far we have four options:
1. Try for the OSF anyway as a drop-in, and go to a nearby restaurant if the wait is too long (we did this the year they lost my reservation)
2. Send someone to the OSF earlier in the day to get on the list and hope for the best; have another nearby restaurant as a backup
3. Make a reservation at a nearby sushi restaurant that is about the same distance from con as the OSF
4. Make a reservation at a nearby pizza/pasta restaurant that takes reservations
I havenāt called either of the alternative restaurants to see if they have anything open for this large of a group, since I want to make sure that no one has any issues with either type of cuisine or any preferences. I like option #3 myself and will go with that if I donāt hear from anyone.

If Dinnerstuck does end up happening, how can one reserve a spot? I've always kinda wanted to attend!
Hello there!
I hope you donāt mind that I answer this publicly, so that others can know what the state of Dinnerstuck is. (Is this my State of the Dinnerstuck address? ;P)
Dinnerstuck is happening. As far as I know, itāll be the usual time and place for Fanime ā Saturday evening of con, ~8PM, meet at Cesar Chavez park, walk to the Old Spaghetti Factory. This likely wonāt change, unless some other conflict comes up (itās the same day as the RGU group so thatās the only possible conflict on my end).
It will remain 21+.
Iāll get the post up in a few weeks, or about a month before con starts. That is when reservations open. To reserve a spot, you simply send me an ask or message, saying that you would like a spot (or X number of spots), the names of all attendees (the name they want on their nametag), and their tumblr handles (if applicable), and, if desired, the color you want your nametag to be written in. And thatās it!
You should attend. Itās a really chill event. :] And you should do it now, because this is supposed to be the final Dinnerstuck, so itās your last chance!
Oh man, you're doing Homestuck meet ups for longer than I did. Kudos to you. Lots of stress, lots of mothering on children, lots of money, lots of baking. Bless your patience.
Oh, Anon...this is one of the nicer asks Iāve gotten. :]
Honestly, Dinnerstuck is a huge pain to run. Iāve had some pretty big issues with it (leading me to make increasingly strict rules about it), and it used to take a lot out of me. Once I made it 21+, though, it really got way better, and now itās a lot of fun and not nearly as much stress.Ā
I got tired of the mothering of children thing (Iām really not the motherly type at all), especially after a fairly scary experience where unsupervised 12 and 13 year olds showed up. If you arenāt familiar with the format of this event, itās where we all go off-site at a con (several blocks away) to a sit-down dinner, so itās at night in a downtown area (it was after 10 by the time we got back to the con area in this case). I really didnāt want to hang out with kids under half my age, and I was /really/ glad that Iām the one running the events and not a predator, since it could have been way worse. So I made it 21+ after that, and itās worked out wonderfully.Ā
Though, Iām sure you can understand why Iām stopping soon. Iāve almost entirely stopped attending HS gatherings at cons, and I might not attend the one at Fanime this year because as you said, lots of time, money, baking, stress, even though Iām not the one running it. (And do I really want to struggle with my Condesce cosplay again? It might be a good farewell to the comic to wear it one last time, but is it worth it?)
Kudos to you for running meetups for as long as you did, Anon. :] It really does take the patience of a saint sometimes.
do you think you will be doing dinnerstuck at fanimecon again this year? it was super fun last year and id love to be part of it again, if its going to happen
Hello there, Anon!
Iām glad you enjoyed it last year. :]
The short answer to your question: probably.
The longer answer: I donāt know the future status of Dinnerstuck.
The idea was that I was going to do the events until the comic ended, and then do a big farewell event, and that would be that. If the comic actually ends on 4/13, then I might not do one at Fanime, or Fanime might be the last official Dinnerstuck before the big off-con one I want to do.
Even if I do Dinnerstuck in its current incarnation at Fanime, itāll probably be smaller, since Iāve changed it to a 21+ event. (If I do a big off-con one, the age restriction would be different.) Though, now that itās 21+, itās way less of a hassle to organize, and I probably could continue to do them (though Fanime ones have always been a pain for a different reason than SacAnime ones, and age wonāt change that). I was getting pretty burned out, since these events have been much harder to organize than most people would realize.
Iāll probably stop doing public Dinnerstucks starting at SacAnime Summer, but for Fanime? I donāt know if Iāll do a public Dinnerstuck there or not. (Private friend dinners at cons will continue, but not under the Dinnerstuck name and without being open to the public.)
I know that doesnāt really help much with your question. Keep an eye out for posts about it once we get closer to con. (Hell, I donāt even know what cosplays Iām making yet, let alone whether Dinnerstuck will happen @____@)
This is the official Dinnerstuck post for SacAnime Winter 2016.Ā
There will be an age limit. It will be 21+ to the general public, and 18+ with approval or invitation. This is to prevent any potential issues from having minors at the event, and to keep the age level a bit closer to my own (and thus more comfortable for me and for some of our regulars). I have the 18+ with approval mostly in order to accommodate mixed-age groups of friends or people who want to bring a sibling/friend/SO/etc. who may be on the other side of the age line. The approval is required because of the below point.
Alcohol is now allowed! This isnāt a barstuck event where that is the main focus, but if you are an adult and want to unwind after a long con with a drink or two with your meal? Go right ahead. The alcohol restriction was there previously because of the mixed age group, but since this event is now age-restricted, that is no longer an issue. Please, no sharing of alcoholic beverages with under-21 attendees.
So hereās the info:
Sunday, January 3rd
6:30PM
Meeting location: Front lawn of the Memorial Auditorium (1515 J Street)
Dinner location: Old Spaghetti Factory (1910 J street)
Base cost: $3/person (for tip)
RSVP required
Rules and further info under the cut.
There is a hard upper limit of 15 individuals (including myself).Iāll be closing the list either the Thursday before con (12/31/15) or once full, whichever comes first.
Dinner will run around $10~15/person. This is on top of the $3 base cost. You can take a look at the menu here if you like. There are gluten-free and vegetarian options. The location may change, so if it does, I will notify everyone.
This event is 21+.
If you are over 18 and under 21 and want to attend, still message me, especially if you have attended previously. You may need to remind me of who you are. Iām more likely to accept people within this age range if I know who you are. If you are over 21, just RSVP as usual. If you are within a mixed-age group, please let me know ā Iām also more likely to approve 18-20 year olds who are with someone of drinking age who is attending.
I know I might get some backlash for this, and Iām sorry if you are going to be excluded by age, but itās gotten to the point where I have few other options that I would be comfortable with. You can take a look at my Fanimecon debrief for my reasoning. If anyone who is younger or who is up to it wants to take up an event in this style that allows for younger guests, please message me and I can help you plan. I want a space for younger members of the fandom, but I canāt have that be this particular space anymore.
Since this event is highly size-limited, I am going to have to enforce the RSVP list. Iāve done the honor system in the past, but because of restaurant size limitations and people bringing extra attendees in the past, this will no longer work.Ā
The restaurant we are attending this SacAnime requires reservations. Let me repeat that. IĀ have to make a reservation to get in to this place. That means having as accurate of a headcount before the event as possible. Also, because this is a sit-down restaurant, the size limitation is small ā only 15 people total can attend. This includes myself. This means that if you are planning on bringing friends along, please let me know beforehand so I can make sure there is enough room and that I make the reservation for the correct group size. If you feel there might be an issue where someone may or may not be able to make it, again, please let me know with as much advance notice as possible. If you are in this kind of situation, tell me, and Iāll give you my cell # so you can get a hold of me at the con itself.
As you have noticed, I have added a base cost to this event. This will be paid, in cash, at the start of the event, and will go towards a collective tip for the waitstaff. You are perfectly welcome and highly encouraged to tip on your own on top of this but this is to help limit the size of the event and to make sure that the staff get the tip they deserve.
This will be the procedure.
Before we leave, Iām going to have everyone line up. You will place your $3 in cash into the Bag of Holding, in exchange for a nametag. This nametag will have your Tumblr name or whatever other name you go by (and donāt mind possibly showing up in photographs on the internet). Once everyone has their nametag and I have everyoneās cash, we will walk down there. At the end of dinner, the cash will then be given to the waitstaff as a tip.
The nametags are simply a fun way to enforce The List, rather than reading off names from a literal list. I figured that it would be helpful, especially if you have never been to one of these events and donāt know anyone there, to know how to refer to everyone/have an easy way to get tumblr names from everyone.
When you RSVP, please tell me what name you want on your nametag/the nametags of anyone else in your group.
Iām keeping the rules pretty much the same, though by raising the age limit Iām hoping that I wonāt have to tell yāall how to behave. ;]
Now for the rules.
These are pretty straightforward and largely common sense, but will make things a lot smoother if everyone follows them. They also include other bits of information that are not actually rules but that are still relevant (such as health and safety information, etc.). They are listed in no particular order.
- Well-sealed paint is allowed. If you have paint on your arms, legs, or other places that may rub off on furniture, please either bring something to protect the location (a long-sleeve shirt, a towel to sit on, makeshift armsocks made of a pair of tights with holes cut out for hands, etc.) or remove your paint before attending, no matter how well sealed it is. PAX is fine, as well as paint restricted to chest/neck/face/etc. This is on the honor system (I trust y'all), I just donāt want our group to leave smears of grey all over a place of business, so I want people to be extra careful.
- The walk is short (~4 blocks to the OSF), but if the walk is an issue at all, please let me know, and I can see about ride arrangements.
- Oversized or realistic props are not allowed. Small props are fine (say, knitting needles, etc.), but large props that may not fit into the building or realistic guns and such (something that may frighten non-convention restaurant patrons) might pose a problem. If you need a place to stash props before the event, or think you might need a place to stash props, message me and we can work something out. Same goes for oversized horns ā sorry Condesce and Nitram cosplayers. This is simply a size and safety issue. Also, items not allowed at SacAnime or illegal in the state of California are not allowed.
- You are responsible for your own money and ride arrangements. Please donāt try to skip out on bill or rely on luck and the kindness of others when it comes to rides.
- Please try to order at least something, out of respect for the restaurant. Even if you just order a soda or side, thatās still something. This is primarily a dinner event taking place at a busness. (By the way, bread, soup/salad, and dessert is included with the price of an entree, so you get a lot of food for your money. Iām not saying that everyone should split a meal, but Iām saying that the portions are rather large. ;] Just donāt mooch off of the bread brought for the whole table without ordering for yourself.) Also, since this will be a large group at a sit-down restaurant, you should budget a tip for the probably overworked and underpaid waitstaff.
- A small note on tabs ā to make it easier on the staff and yourselves, please keep track of who is on each tab. We will likely have separate tabs rather than a large communal one. We will also likely make a list at the start of the dinner of who is on each tab to make it easiest on staff. Donāt combine yourself with strangers and then worry about them not paying ā stick with groups you know. Bring cash if possible.
- Ā Stick together in the group or a group as much as possible on the walk there and back. The area isnāt super sketch, but it is still a downtown area at night. It wonāt be dark when we walk there, but may be on the way back. Try to bring a personal light if at all possible. Iāll probably have a few glowsticks so I and others can help manage the group on the trip both ways. The safety of attendees is my primary concern.
- The usual ābehave yourselvesā rule. Try not to get too loud or disturb other restaurant patrons. Volume level can sometimes be a bit of an issue at this event, but Iāve (thankfully!) never had any other behavior issues. I know everyone is excited and thereās a big group, but try to keep it down, okay? (This also goes for the usual āplease act like a normal human being who has been socialized in our societyā type warnings, which I feel like I have to say, but again, I havenāt had issues. The group is usually pretty chill.)
- If you have any other health or safety concerns, please message me so we can discuss them privately.
Please remember that you RSVP by messaging me, not by reblogging this post. You can reblog this all you want to boost it, but if you are planning on attending, please send me an ask so that I know for sure that you are attending.
Also, I will need the following information on anyone planning on attending (so if you are doing one RSVP for an entire group of friends, please tell me this information for everyone):name the attendee wants on the nametag, ages of all attendees. Ā I can also accommodate color preferences (as long as it is a color on the rainbow) and pronoun preferences by request. The name doesnāt have to be your given name ā it can be your tumblr name, a nickname you go by, a chosen name, etc. This is what you want people to call you, and something you donāt mind possibly ending up in photographs on the internet. Names and ages are the most important piece of information I need from you.
Remember, AN RSVP IS REQUIRED TO ATTEND, and if you are not on the RSVP list, you will be unable to attend. Thatās how it will have to be.
The size cap on this one is fairly low, so try to get your RSVPs in sooner rather than later to guarantee a spot!

After...actually quite a bit of deliberation and consideration, I have decided that Dinnerstuck will be happening this SacAnime Summer, but it will be pretty much reconceptualized from the ground up.
Itās getting to the point where this event is too much for me to handle, and I donāt want to have to deal with any more problems (or any problems more serious than the ones weāve had in the past). Iām also moving a bit away from the HS fandom and HS cosplay in general, so I think this event wonāt be around for too much longer. Iāll probably throw a big Dinnerstuck farewell bash once the comic finally concludes, but in the meantime, the events will be smaller, more casual, and with an age restriction. Iām getting burned out, and I canāt be Fandom Mom for too much longer with regards to this specific event. Itās a far more stressful event to run than most people probably realize, so Iām looking to take away the stress but keep the fun and the chill atmosphere.
Iāll still be around at cons, Iāll still be running this event, and Iāll still be Homestucking it up (especially with some of my elaborate costumes like Condy and Roxy, and with the ulta-comfy Mom cosplay), so Iām not leaving the fandom entirely (especially since Iām still into HS!) but Iāll be a less visible presence in the local fandom.
I still need to rework the Dinnerstuck model, so expect a post on that...eventually. I expect early to mid August. Iām a bit sad to see this event end in itsĀ āclassicā form, but the changes are needed, and Iām excited for how it will (hopefully) turn out. :]
The Dinnerstuck list is updated, and it is officially full! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. Otherwise, see yāall at the con. :]
