From 4.30.19 "Fruit" is about falling in love. Here's a snippet of the beginning. I wrote a way more complicated set of riffs and changes for this song, and here you see a pared down version of what I'm playing for a different feel/sound that is more vocal focused. At the time I wrote this originally, sometime around 2008 - 2010, I was influenced by an album by Hit The Lights, called "This Is A Stick Up..." I wrote this song top to bottom, the first line was the first word I wrote: "Oh, the spotlight's on us The delicate silhouette of You and me, close -- I'm asking for your hand in my dreams As simple as it seems, this ain't easy, but You already know... Look into my eyes, Staring at the apple at yourself-- Forbidden fruit put on the highest shelf. Distress, I just wanna see your best, Go ahead and tease me. Can we put this to the test? I'm asking for your hand in my dreams. As simple as it seems, this ain't easy, but you know..." I wrote "Over Your Love" for another songwriting class about two years ago, and it made last year's DIME Sessions project, organized by my college @dime_detroit. The chorus and bridge section from that song is featured in this video on guitar, the instrument that song started on. I feel this is "old-school music" with a modern delivery, featuring guitar, bass guitar, a horn section, keyboards, drums, hand percussion, and vocalists. When writing this for the assignment in my class, basically all I had was a chord progress I liked in the key of C# natural minor, some sense of what I wanted for drums (snare on all four beats of a 4/4 time signature), and the drive to write a song under a deadline knowing I could do it. Melody, title, and everything came from a mix of inspiration and formula. The rest of the song came rather quickly, and the experience of recording this song was one to be remembered.
