It wasn’t until the 1970s that the key for the exclamation point—which in some ways is the standing ovation of correspondence—was added to a typewriter’s keyboard. The exclamation point has no grammatical purpose except to turn up the volume to eleven. Language is diminished by inflation, and the drawback to exclamation points and standing ovations is that they box language into a corner with nowhere to go. The exclamation point is now used with such frequency that, like standing ovations, its absence conveys more meaning than its presence.
