Blessed-cursed. The best example of duality in an ENHYPEN title track name.
And probably the most subtle one about it too (other than Tamed-Dashed).
The MV is similar to Tamed-Dashed in that it, on a surface level, has little to do with the storyline. It’s no TXT ‘Nap of a Star’, let’s just say that. It’s also similar to Drunk-Dazed in its use of lighting, camera angles, and general cinematography.
It reminds me a lot of this BTS Dionysus fan MV, as well, and of JUST B’s ‘Tick Tock’ MV.
We begin in this apartment, which I have seen in some BTS media, but am unsure where - perhaps ‘Ego’ and the Wings album?
It’s also 1999 going into 2000, which is funny since it’s before any of the members were even born. It also informs some of the aesthetic of the MV, which, again, is similar to ‘Drunk-Dazed’. I think this is less ‘early 2000s fashion’ and more ‘TV version of what 20s people think 2000s fashion looks like’, but it gets the point across. It’s almost certainly a way to show how the boys remain young forever - as immortal vampires. We see them in classic 17 and 1800s clothes in teasers for ‘Given-Taken’ and ‘Drunk-Dazed’, and in ‘Drunk-Dazed’, ‘Tamed-Dashed’ and ‘Blessed-Cursed’ we see them in more modern, 2000s to 2010s clothes. In ‘Blessed-Cursed’, we also see more futuristic clothes and scenes - think ‘Thunderbirds’ or ‘Ender’s Game’.
We are slowly moving forward through time, seeing how the world changes, yet the boys don’t change with it.
We start with this Jay shot, which is overlaid with graphics, including ones showing the year ‘2000’, as well as ‘Y2K’. Are they trying to imply that ENHYPEN caused Y2K? That it was a supernatural event? Or are they just trying to cement the era and make Jay look cool? Probably the latter.
Throughout the MV, we are introduced to each of the boys in their own space. Jungwon is in a padded red room, with a light in the ceiling that reminds me of ‘Blood Sweat and Tears’, and with a guitar. A clear reference to music and idol life. Ni-ki is in this other room, with white light on one side and a yellow projection of ‘liar’, a word we know to be important to the album, on the other side.
Jake and Heeseung come together in this (more on that later). Jake is in a white room with some red fur that makes not-too-subtle angel wings, and Heeseung is in a black space with sand on the floor and dust in the air. Jake’s wings also remind me of kagunes in Tokyo Ghoul - another sinister piece of imagery inspired by both Christianity and East Asian myth.
Sunoo is somewhere with a wall of lights behind him (and looks like he came out of the ‘No More Dream’ MV), Jay is in a corridor which looks like it has gaping mouths on the side (look at the wall pattern to the right of his head), and Sunghoon is in a futuristic room on a throne.
Some interesting things to note:
Sunghoon is the one shown with futuristic imagery the most
Jake and Sunghoon are the only ones on thrones
Each piece of scenery has a different focus, and each has a unique source of lighting (more on lighting later).
And there goes my image limit! Very fitting - these shots have nicely set up the settings and vibe of the MV.
