My guy claims to be such a blood thirsty warrior that he needs Serosh to keep it in check, and yet when the fight begins, it doesn't really seem it. Like, sure, he throws out the odd Siberian Express and an aerial Russian slam, but the fight is still relatively tame all things considered.

Like, it's not the vibes out someone with uncontrollable violent urges. More calculated hand to hand combat than and mindles brute.

So what would I have done

Simple, I would have made him very similar to Augus from Asuras Wrath.

Now, who is this blind swordsman you may ask, as you haven't played one of the greatest games capcom have and ever will make, Augus is a warrior who's three reasons to live are women, alcohol and fighting. But mainly fighting. In Augus's own words

'I don't fight for good, and I don't fight evil. I just fight!' Beliving that regardless of everything, the one who stands in the end is righteous.

This type of mentality would make sense for Hoarah Loux, chieftain of the badlands. With how they are described, but that's not what we get in the game.

Continuing, Godfreys lost grace, which is what got him exciled. Grace being what connects them to marika and the greater will (if I remember correctly). Now, if we quickly look back at Augus in his game, mantra is a thing that exists, it is the cosmic energy produced by emotions and prayers. Augus refuses to actually tap into this power beliving that he alone could have all the power he could ever need.

If we put this idea onto Godfrey, we could have this concept that Godfrey never had faith in the greater will following along souly so they could fight in wars for fun, marika only keeping him around for the purpose of winning those wars knowing full well he lacked any connection to grace. So when the wars were done, she could get rid of him, for his purpose would have been fufiled.

So why would he return to fight the tarnished? Because the path of grace informed him where he could find a good fight, and that was something he couldn't pass up.
