It was sweet. Laf and Herc certainly thought so, seeing their young friend practically glowing whenever he spoke of his friend Francis. Things didn’t change much when Francis asked John out, not really; they were already close. All it added was kissing and more cuddling than there already was.

They liked seeing John so happy. A plus side was they were both from South Carolina; the Laurens were well acquainted with the Kinlochs, and Francis understood how against homosexuality John’s father was. They managed to stay under the radar for both of their families, coming across as best friends rather than the lovers they were.

It was all going well, John was pretty happy. Then it went downhill pretty quick. It started with John going to the bar with Laf, Herc and Francis. He and Francis stayed pretty close, occasionally flirting until he went to get drinks and chat with Laf and Herc for a bit. When he returned to him, it definitely hurt to see his boyfriend kissing some woman.

He left the bar, and after a yelling match the next afternoon that brought their headaches back full force, John thought the issue was resolved.

Apparently not, considering after two years when John was days away from his twenty-third birthday - four days away in fact, and he’d walked in on Francis cheating on him with that same woman from the bar. In his bed.

They fought later naturally. They spent hours in their screaming match before Francis said a few words that hit John below the belt and they broke up.

He spent his twenty-third birthday in his dorm room with his head in Lafayette’s lap and his legs in Hercules’s lap while they watched movies together to cheer him up. The only times anyone got up was to get food or go to the bathroom.

A month or so later, John’s roommate he never gave a shit about nor bothered learning the name of changed rooms, hating the fact John would end up being noisy and going to bed at twelve or one in the morning, always up by six or seven to go to classes.

When he was at lunch a week or so later, that was when he met his new roommate. He was with Laf and Herc at their usual lunch table, chatting about some dumb things. When Aaron Burr was walking past with a new guy - cute guy, John’s mind added unhelpfully - the guys made some dumb comment to him.

Burr said something that made John huffy. Why stay silent and wait for good things to come when he could be the cause of such good things?

Of course John snapped at Burr with this, smirking triumphantly after as the boys agreed. He was surprised at this new guy sided with him so quickly though. The guy sat with them where they learned his name was Alexander Hamilton, and they were already inseparable by the time it was time to go back to class.
