is bree van der kamp TMA?
answer 1: she's overtly depicted as a cis woman, so no
answer 2: bree has a repeated association with (& proximity to) queerness over the course of the show, moreso than for any other main character. in light of a repeated association of her with a distinctly campy approach to writing & styling (exhibit a: her name literally ends with "camp") as well as with certain key themes & concerns (eg the navigation of the interplay between "classy" & "trashy", or the mix of laudability & grotesquery that accompanies the pursuit of things like "poise" & "reputation") that suggests a knowing, tongue-in-cheek, elbow-nudging recognition of her potential for being connoted with humour & aesthetics that are associated with queerness--tbh it's no surprise that she has been received as a "gay icon". doesnt make her transmisogynized but (1) it's fun to think about & (2) it lays the groundwork for answer 3
answer 3: it wouldnt surprise me if there were trans women who found aspects of her portrayal salient to their experience? she's associated with a like willful & conscious pursuit of womanhood (& femininity & motherhood & wifehood) for which she is repeatedly challenged, deemed both lacking & excessive by peers, or brought face-to-face with the gruesome realities of gender as a mediator of social navigation. elements & events further to this include: faking a pregnancy (a pretty pointed plot beat in the context of this reading!) to protect her daughter's (read: family's, self's, property's) image, her valuation of spousal fidelity above her own happiness, or of course her very first conflict: her retreat into domestic labour as a shield against vulnerability & sincerity. she suffers blowback for both successes & failures in this vein. again, i wouldnt be surprised if there were trans women who found her narrative(s) resonant: it calls to mind the kind of navigation of the crossroads of gender, self-expression, & systemic violence that trans women often (ime) experience & discuss. so like tldr: i feel the groundwork for that interpretation (or a similar one) is present. any trans women/transfems who have watched All Of Desperate Housewives are welcome to weigh in
i love the way the dh writers depict men talking to each other theyre like "come on man, bro, we should have a guys hang out for the boys thats just us dudes, so that we can belch together"
