Nero with the pachinko Collab lion ✊🫡 too cute to resist
All thanks to this tweet:
Summary: Why the Lady in Red is a Representation of Plotia Hieria.
This is a summary of my previous post, which isn't much longer, sorry! Here's the summary I made:
------
The connection between Nero's anonymous mother and the historical figure of Plotia Hieria rests on five pillars:
---
1. The Mystery of Identity
Plotia Hieria is a shadow in history. It is unknown whether she was a courtesan, a wealthy matron, or a Greek priestess. The Lady in Red's name has never been revealed by Capcom. Both are women defined by what we don't know.
---
2. The Meaning of the Names: Three Faces
The name Plotia Hieria carries three contradictory possibilities:
Name Meaning Profile
Plotia Connection to the Gens Plautia Wealthy matron, landowner, independent
Hieria (Greek hieros) "Sacred", "Consecrated" Greek priestess, spiritual power
Hieria (ironic use) Hetaira / Courtesan Educated, desirable woman, ambiguous status
History doesn't decide which is true. The Lady in Red could be any of these things—and Capcom will never say.
--
3. The Obstinate Refusal
Plotia lived to old age to tell the tale: Virgil refused to be with her with the utmost obstinacy (pertinacissime refusesse). She was rejected.
Vergil had a son with the Lady in Red, but abandoned her. His response to Dante: "That was a long time ago." The same refusal. The same wall. ---
4. Tityrus and Amaryllis: The Pastoral Poem
In Virgil's poems, the shepherd Tityrus (the poet's alter ego) sings of his beloved Amaryllis while enjoying the protection of an "earthly god" (Octavian). He traded love for power.
Virgil is Tityrus. The Lady in Red is his Amaryllis—the muse he lived for and abandoned to follow his own "earthly god": power.
--------------------------------------------
The name Amaryllis derives from the Greek amarýssō ("to sparkle," "to shine")—just like the Lady in Red, who appears in a flash of red. The Amaryllis belladonna flower means "beautiful lady" in Italian.
--
5. The "Significant" Woman
Virgil's voice actor said, "To be worthy of Vergil's time, she needs to be significant."
Plotia was the only woman in the Roman poet's life whose name survived. Lady in Red is the only one who broke through the defenses of Sparda's son. Both were significant enough to be remembered—even though they were abandoned.
---
Plotia Hieria in "The Death of Virgil" (1945)
In Hermann Broch's novel, which takes place during the last 48 hours of the Roman poet's life, Plotia Hieria is not merely a lover or a minor historical figure. She is the personification of renounced love.
What she represents:
· She appears in Virgil's feverish hallucinations to remind him of everything he sacrificed in the name of his art.
· She is the life he did not live. The touch he did not give. The son he did not raise.
The climax:
· Plotia appears and calls him to a mutual love and to the destruction of his masterpiece, the Aeneid — the renunciation of beauty in the name of love.
· In the end, upon dying, Virgil reconciles with her — not as a person, but as a principle: the love he finally accepts having abandoned.
Applying to DMC:
· This is exactly Vergil. The son of Sparda who rejected humanity in the name of power. Who had a son and abandoned him.
· At the end of DMC5, Vergil finally accepts Nero — just as Virgil, on his deathbed, reconciles with Plotia.
· The difference: the historical Virgil refused Plotia before any involvement. Vergil, however, had a son — and still refused to stay. His reconciliation came decades later, at Nero's hands.
Plotia Hieria, in Broch's novel, is the voice that calls Virgil to renounce beauty in the name of love. In DMC, she is the love that Vergil left behind to embrace power — and which he only reclaims when he finally accepts Nero.
----
Conclusion
All great power demands an equally great sacrifice. And for Vergil, that sacrifice was her.
Just like Plotia Hieria—whose very name carries three contradictory identities (matron, priestess, or courtesan)—Lady in Red is the great unsolved mystery of Devil May Cry.
------
She is Vergil's Amaryllis. The muse he sang of and lost. The "beautiful lady" in the red dress who shone like a flash—and then disappeared forever.
watch it while you can...
