So, I had this idea yesterday for @meldy-artsâ Imperial AU, where Dev and Ria end up going undercover in the rebelâs ranks to get information, and I just had to write it! Granted, it may be a little cliche or cheesy, but I had a lot of fun writing this!
This is a bit of a continuation of my other Imperial AU fics (All in the Past and Old Names) but it kind of skips ahead to where Dev and Ria have spent more time together and are even more comfortable around each other.Â
Hope yâall like it! :D
Fic below the cut:
Dev never thought he would go undercover. His talents had use elsewhere. Besides, while he always obeyed the Empire, he had always done so out of necessity than loyalty. Undercover work was the last thing he couldâve been trusted with. And yet here he was, dressed in simple civilian clothes and pretending to be a rebel. The mission a simple one, in fact it could mean the destruction of the rebellion once and for all, but it was still odd walking pretending to be someone he wasnât. He had to pretend to be nice to others, had to force smiles or laughs to try to get the rebels to trust him. The only times he managed to be very convincing though were when Tala was around. He knew the Empire had chosen both of them because of their age. The rebels would be more sympathetic to those who were younger, especially when paired with a sob story. It was an effective strategy, and Dev would be lying if he said he wasnât happy to be working with Tala. Out of everyone in the Empire, she was the only one he truly felt equal with, at least when it came to their beliefs. They both had their disagreements with the Empire, and they had both once been disconnected from Imperial life. Of course, they would never think of turning back on the Empire, but they also didnât believe that everything the Empire did was entirely practical. And while no one knew thatâs what they thought, Dev thought it made this mission quite suitable for them.
A cough interrupted Devâs thoughts as he made his way towards the rebelâs control room. He smothered a groan, ready to force a smile once again, but as he turned, he saw Tala. She tilted her head towards a small room then walked in.
Glancing around to make sure no one saw them, Dev followed her into the room and closed the door.
âYou have more orders?â he asked, making sure to keep his voice low. For some reason, while he outranked her, she had been doing most of the direct communication between them and their superiors. Maybe Devâs disregard for protocol hadnât gone unnoticed. Or perhaps the commanders felt more at ease talking with an officer, not a sith. A smart choice in general, but Dev knew Tala wasnât much for sugarcoating things either. Most of the times she was even more blunt than him.
Tala nodded. âWe are supposed to get the location of as many of the rebelâs sources as possible. Where they get their supplies, money, etcetera. The includes sympathizers. If the Empire can squash their support, the rebellion will get weaker and more desperate.â
âMakes sense,â Dev said. âSo we just need to keep an ear out for any contacts.â In reality, he couldâve just read the minds of the leaders and gotten all of the information they needed. There had been a few times he had been tempted to do so. But some people were more alert to their thoughts being read than others, so that was a last resort.
âYes, but we could also move things along. If we can âaccidentallyâ destroy some of their supplies-â
âThey will have to find more,â Dev finished the sentence, not even having to read her mind to tell what she was thinking.
A frown formed on her face, and a glimmer of annoyance shone in her eyes. âYes, but next time donât interrupt. Now, I know how to rewire a blaster to explode, so I just need you to keep any busybodiesâ-
Just then the door slid open. A rebel stood in doorway, his gaze fixed on the datapad in his hands. Dev lifted his hand, ready to âconvinceâ him that he hadnât seen anything, but then Tala grabbed his shirt. And she kissed him.
Devâs froze, his mind short-circuiting at the feeling of her lips against his. His heart sped up and his eyes slowly started to close even while his mind was telling him this was just a ruse.
âOhâŚuhâŚsorry!â the rebel stammered and then the door closed again.
As soon as it did, Tala pulled away and glanced at the door. âThat should buy us a few more minutes,â she said, her face as stoic as ever, but the smallest hint of a blush touched her cheeks. Or maybe that was just Devâs imagination. All he knew was that his face felt like it was on fire. As much as he tried to ignore it, to tell himself he was being foolish, he couldnât deny that he had admired Tala for a while now, and not just her battle tactics and training capabilities. All the times they had been together had been the most enjoyable days of his service to the Empire, and as much as he told himself it was just friendship â which in and of itself was looked down upon â he knew there was more to it.
A hard punch to his shoulder jerked Dev out of his musings and the slight adrenaline rush that had come over him as a result of the kiss.
âFocus, Morgan!â Tala snapped, using his last name for the first time in a while, as the mission called for them to act more casual.
Shaking his head, Dev, forced his thoughts away, though he could still feel a slight warmth in his cheeks. âRight, sorry.â
Rolling her eyes, Tala glared at him for a moment, then spoke again. âAs I was saying, you have to keep any nosy rebels out of my way while I set the charge. Can you do that? Or do you need another punch to help you focus?â
âNo, Iâve got it,â he said, scolding himself for allowing himself to get so distracted, even if it was because of a kiss.
âGood,â she said, straightening the collar of her worn out jacket, one that didnât quite seem to suit her, and yet she still managed to pull it off. âWeâll plan on it tonight. Now we should go and see what these rebels have in store for today.â
âI sure hope itâs something useful this time, thereâs not much we can learn from training exercises,â Dev said, as he stepped back and opened the door.
âWe learn enough,â Tala said, her voice carrying more depth than she let on. âYou just donât like getting beat, thatâs all.â
âHey, you know thatâs only because-â
âIâve had more training than you,â she cut him off before he could finish his sentence as a rebel walked by them.
Dev mentally hit himself for almost slipping up again. It was so easy to be himself around her, he tended to forget when he could and couldnât say exactly what was on him mind. âRightâŚwell, Iâm still hoping for an actual mission.â
âToo bad newbies, youâve still got some more training to do.â
The voice of one of their new âfriendsâ almost made Dev roll his eyes. This particular rebel, Listra, was a little too upbeat for his liking. He was looking forward to the day when he didnât have to put up with her happy smiles and bubbly personality.
A hint of a smirk formed on the corner of Talaâs mouth â she seemed to have perfected acting just friendly enough, while still seeming mostly like herself. Dev wished he could find that balance.
âGreat, I can beat Dev up some more then.â
âOh, so thatâs how itâs going to be? Itâs on.â The smirk that grew on Devâs face was real. Only Talaâs remarks seemed to make him genuinely amused, even if he was determined not to let her beat him this time.
Dev groaned as he hit the floor once again. His back was sore from being thrown so many times. And unlike the last few times, his body didnât seem to want to cooperate with getting up again. Sure, he could channel the Force to help him, but he was determined to beat Tala without it. However that had proven much harder than he had thought.
âDo you yield?â Tala said, standing over him, a smirk on her face.
âNever,â Dev said, forcing himself to sit up.
âAlright, I think thatâs enough training for one day,â Listra said, stepping in between them. Dev frowned at her back. Wimpy Rebels, this was nothing compared to the training he had gone throughâŚgranted he had been channeling the Force then, but he still hadnât stopped until he was bloodied and bruised. Right now he was bruised and slightly humiliated. Â
âWe are just getting started and you already want us to stop?â Tala asked, disapproval lining her voice. Clearly she was used to rougher training as well.
âMan, you guys really like beating each other up donât you?â Listra said, shaking her head in disapproval as she headed towards the door. âWell, Iâm in charge and I say you guys are done, go take it easy for the rest of the day.â
As soon as she left the room, Dev rolled his eyes and looked at Tala, who was frowning at the door.
âNo wonder their side is losing,â Tala muttered as she walked over and offered Dev a hand.
Dev looked at her hand for a moment, knowing he should just get up on his own, but he found himself accepting it. âThatâs good for us though,â he said as Tala helped pull him to his feet.
Tala shrugged. âI guess so. Itâs still pathetic though. Now, ready for another round?â She asked, stepping back and lifting up her hands, ready to fight once again.
Even with his aching back and sore muscles, Dev nodded. Listra may have told them to rest, but there was no way he was giving up yet. One day he would beat Tala without the Force, and the only way he would get there would be to keep fighting. And who better to train with than the person he was trying to best? The fact that he enjoyed her company was just a bonus.

âAnd what exactly are you doing here young man?â Ezra Bridger froze as he heard the voice of a woman behind him. The false cadet slowly turned around to find himself standing in front of Maketh Tua, acting governor of Lothal. And hanging around Agent Kallus´s office was probably not the thing she expected from a cadet.
So Ezra quickly straightened his posture. The minister looked at him with a saturnine look on her face, arms crossed and clearly displeased by something that could easily be a problem with the discipline of a cadet. Ezra was glad that these dumb helmets hid their faces, in case he needed to run he still had a chance that his cover was not blown. But best would be to get the minister´s mind busy with something else.
âI...I just wanted to know...if Agent Kallus investigates the commandante.â Now the minister frowned. âAnd why, if I may ask, should he do so?â she asked, her voice dangerously low and she even made a step closer to the young rebel. He suddenly noticed that the woman was quite tall and surprisingly managed to make him nervous...not as much as a real cadet, but Ezra felt that he really was in trouble, if he could not convince her of his story. Luckily he had seen the sadistic officer and his brute friend in action, at the day he met the Ghost crew. So while he did spin some lies, the foundation was built on truth.Â
âAbout the complaints...and how he manages to get away with what he´s doing.â Ezra said, trying to sound both confidant and shy at the same time, probably not the best combination. The minister shook her head. âWhat complaints? If an officer was accused of misbehavior I´d know. Is this really your excuse for leaving your duty behind?âÂ
Ezra now started to sweat. âIf you don´t know...can he you know...hide complaints about himself?â The expression on the minister´s face changed. âThe complaints would be processed by...commandante Aresco...he is the one you mean?â she asked Ezra, who nodded as he didn´t trust his voice to hide the relief he felt as the minister now looked doubtful, but her eyes were no longer staring down at Ezra. âHow do you know about this?â she suddenly asked and Ezra cursed himself, as he had congratulated himself a bit too early.
âI am a transfer cadet, minister, but the boys from around tell stories about the commandante and the taskmaster. Nobody went into detail...but the two are pretty infamous around town...at least that´s what I heard.â he explained. With all the trouble brewing in the last time, Ezra being a large part of it, the minister seemed to take the bait. Under his hemlet he allowed himself a thin smile, remembering how Aresco and Grint had tried to arrest a simple merchant for treason. If the minister really didn´t know about this...then Ezra might cause some trouble in Lothal´s upper echelons. And it gave him at least a glimmer of hope, if someone in the position of the minister cared for such things enough that she might even do something about it. Ezra would love to hear how Aresco and Glint got taken out by the Empire...that would save them the work to do so later down the road...and if Kallus got distracted with internal problems, that would make it just easier to get his decoder.Â
Minister Tua seemed a bit lost in thought and didn´t complain when Ezra quietly made his way out. She would look into the commandante and see if that cadet had just handed her a plate full of shit...or if members of the imperial military abused their position for personal gain and by that probably created the unrest that haunted Lothal in the first place.
In part 1 and part 2 Axel went from Loth-rat to Ghost crew member.
But one problem with costumes for younglings is they outgrow them pretty fast. So while we hadnât finished his season 3 Ezra yet we had already started on his Imperial Cadet disguise for Ezra! Since that was a lot further along we decided to finish it up!
