How to sniff out a liar: becoming a human lie detector

There are certain times you wish you knew if the other person is lying whether that’s your girl, child or friend. If you are like me you hate lies & you prefer hearing honest people instead of liars. In this tutorial We will teach you how certain body language can reveal that a person is lying. The information that I’m going to pass to you has been studied & proven by behavioural scientists & by FBI agents & police officers.

Below we have outlined the basics on how to sniff out an outright liar, are you ready to get started?

Now to be completely honest detecting liars is extremely difficult & it’s more of an art than a science. There is no single behaviour that will reveal a liar but rather a collection of behaviours that when combined together will show you that the other person might be lying.

Subject’s Pacifiers

The Key to detecting if a person is lying is by knowing when he is uncomfortable. Here’s the idea – generally people who are honest are completely comfortable with themselves but the same cannot be said about liars.

We all unconsciously show that we are uncomfortable through pacifiers(gestures/body movements to help comfort us when we feel uncomfortable such as touching face or hair). Here’s a list of common pacifiers people use:

Face touching

Rubbing the back of the neck

Biting lips

Stroking hair

Playing with jewelery

Covering the neck

Eye blocking- closing eyes tightly or even covering eyes with hands

Rubbing palms on legs

Soaked Hands

  Every person has different pacifiers, your primary goal is to detect the person’s pacifiers through normal conversation first – That’s why investigators first ask you for name & simple stuff you know.

This is important as some people may touch their face or stroke their hair all the time so before going in for the kill you need to study your subject’s behavior.

Get the Subject comfortable

You do this by making small talk, a person will express their comfort by certain body language such as leaning towards you & no folded arms – basically body language that opens up their body. Now as you discuss certain topics notice if the subject uses any pacifiers that you studied earlier, if he does the other person may be lying right in your face.

Other signs of deception

In addition to pacifying behaviors also look for these signs to detect a liar.

Check eye direction – When people try to visualize something they generally look upwards, if they Look up & then on their right  it means they are visualizing something that happened in their past but if instead they  look up & then on their left it means they are trying to visualize something that their mind created out of thin air. 

Lack of emphasis – Usually when people are honest & try to make a point they make lots of emphasis like shouting or slamming their hand on the table, lack of emphasis may mean that the other person is lying.

Little to no movement – When people lie they tend to keep their body still with little movement. This is a survival instinct programmed into us as it’s difficult for a predator too see something that is not moving.

Synchrony –  Let’s say for example that your subject says yes but only after he shakes his head to confirm what he’s saying when naturally it’s supposed to happen at the same time so try to study both the verbal & non verbal communication of the subject.
