We’re eating lunch and I was just staring blankly ahead. Under their breath my girlfriend muttered, “Looks like someone’s been portaled to the dimension of Despondos.”

Clearly the First Ones are shady, I don’t trust Light Hope for a minute and neither should you.

The First Ones didn’t create She-Ra to be some kind of hero in the fight against Mega Horde. They created her to fight with Mega Horde. If all Mega Horde members look just like Hordak/Horde Prime, then whatever Grayskull is sounds like it could be very important to Mega Horde. She-Ra is build from both First Ones and Mega Horde technologies.

They were working together to take over every corner of the universe that they could reach, when two things happened:

They reached Etheria.

Mara figured out the truth.

Maras storyline is going to parallel Adoras. She didn’t realize who was she was working for was evil. And by the time Mara realized it, it was too late. There was nothing she would be able to do to stop The First Ones or Mega Horde. That’s why she pulled Etheria into Despondos. It was the only thing that she could still save- and why she’s so determined to keep Etheria there.

Mara seems to think she made some kind of horrible mistake, and Light Hope seems to think so too.

Despondos is not truly empty. It has many things and creatures existing within it, but it exists on another wavelength, not noticing the intrusion of Etheria.

Except when magic is used to pierce the veil between perceptions.

A grieving Glimmer is manipulated into attempting the Ritual of Power with Shadow Weaver.

But it goes wrong in a different way than with Micah.

A baby ...demon for lack of a better word appears.

It is rapidly growing and intelligent, and Shadow Weaver may have found the perfect child to mold to her designs.

The Dark Dimension was a twice-seen plot device /setting element in both She-Ra and He-Man classic. It was a place that was a boundary between magic and science, whatever that means. 

 Despondos was an unseen dimension the Horde was banished to in the 2002 He-Man reboot.

The She-Ra reboot of Netflix seems to have tied the two together,

Anyway Daimar came from the Dark Dimension and was a sweety in the old cartoon who Skeletor and Evil-Lyn convinced was destined to conquer Eternia. 

A later episode had She-Ra and Hordak have to work together to survive escaping the Dark Dimension. And Encountered The Dark One, who resembled a larger, purple version of an inter-dimensional mercenary Skeletor once hired.

Perhaps someone who got stuck in the Dark Dimension and went native?

Anyway, the Dark One is like your normal self-declared master of a strange land, being a dick and testing people's morality, but a fair sport about it and was impressed by She-Ra's compassion and unwillingness to escalate a conflict.

I could see him personally investigating the disappearance of an important child and discovering Etheria's existance.

Hordak: 'Is building a portal device, and specifically mentions the possiblity of traveling to other planets (something we know they can't do while in Despondos) when talking about it's usefulness'

Skeletor is the "key to Despondos".

Not just the key to Despondos. Skeletor has the power to control Despondos.
