Hello, friends! We actually released two pods this month! Who’d have guessed it could happen again? In all seriousness, we both really liked this movie and we hope you enjoy our chat about how it goes in on the American…
Japanese is an extremely nuanced language, which can make differentiating two similar grammar structures a little confusing.
~かもしれません and ~でしょう are used when the speaker is trying to indicate a possibility without being definite.
So, what’s the difference then?
~でしょう
~でしょう is used when the speaker is taking a guess or has drawn a conclusion based on information he or she already has. This is used to express an opinion or thought about the future without being too definite.
It’s often used when you’re ‘pretty sure’ about something but don’t want to sound too certain.
To apply it use the plain form of a verb, adjective or noun and add
~でしょう to the end.
Examples:
明日は雨が降るでしょう。ーあしたは あめが ふるでしょう。
(It will probably rain tomorrow.)
池田さんは試験を合格するでしょう。ーいけださんは しけんを ごうかくするでしょう。(I’m pretty sure Mr./Ms. Ikeda will pass the exam.)
It can also be used to ask confirmation (again about something you’re pretty sure about but you just want to be certain.)
