Desert Star by Michael Connelly is the latest book in his Ballard & Bosch series. “Renee Ballard has taken over the Open/Unsolved unit. Bosch agrees to work with her as long as he can work on on old case - one where a family was killed and buried in the desert. Bosch finds a break in another case with an unusual source of DNA. And discovers a serial killer that’s been killing for years.” Like all Connelly books, this is a stand-alone so you don’t need to have read any of the previous books. This is a police procedural but Connelly finds ways to make it interesting and new. He does include a genealogy expert which seems to be a big thing for cold cases now. There is great chemistry between Ballard and Bosch. I like that MC has allowed Bosch to age over the years. And I hope he’s not retiring him for good especially with the revelations in this book. Connelly gets my vote for best killer name - “Finbar McShane” Do you have a better one?
