Talk to Derufin and ask him about the dreadful, ghostly images
men of middle-earth â misc. dĂșnedain â headcanon disclaimer
Gondor was a mighty kingdom at its height, and even in the years of its decline it held many fiefdoms within its borders aside from the capital of Minas Tirith. Those who led these provinces were known in times of war as the Captains of the Outlands, for when the King or Steward called upon them they were bound by honor and duty to ride to the defense of their kingdom.      During the War of the Ring, the Captains were rallied together to face the might of Sauron on the Pelennor Fields. From Lossarnach came Forlong the Fat, an old man of great girth and vitality, with two hundred men bearing mighty battle-axes. From Blackroot Vale came Lord Duinhir and his sons Duilin and Derufin, leading five hundred bowmen to battle. From RinglĂł Vale came Dervorin, son of its Lord, with three hundred men on foot; from Anfalas came Golasgil with a long line of civilians, fighting bravely despite their lack of equipment or skill. From the Green Hills came Hirluin the Fair with three hundred gallant green-clad men. From Dor-en-Ernil, Land of Princes, whose capital was Dol Amroth by the sea, came Prince Imrahil with a company of knights and seven hundred soldiers. From AnĂłrien came Benrodir, newly ennobled for his bravery, with two hundred doughty men loyal to their prince. From Calembel came Inram the Tall, who had emptied his settlement of soldiers and led six hundred spearmen in his train; from Ethir Anduin came Nosdiligand, his force of a hundred fishermen small but mighty in their bravery.      These brave warriors fought to defend Minas Tirith, a city not their own, for its people were their kin and deserved not the cruelty of the Enemy. Amid the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, hundreds of soldiers fell; and with them fell many of their lords, also. Forlong, separated from his men, was rendered immobile when his horse was slain, and soon was overrun; Hirluin was killed in battle rushing to the aid of Ăomer of Rohan; Nosdiligand was cut down at the very gates of Minas Tirith, defending against an onslaught of orcs. Though Duinhir survived, his twin sons Duilin and Derufin were slain, trampled by mĂ»makil while attempting to shoot out the monstersâ eyes; they died with questions in their heart of who their mother was, though in truth they had none, for Duinhir had borne them himself after a love affair gone wrong.      Of the Captains of the Outlands, only three were not present for the assault upon Minas Tirith, for they were defending their own lands, besieged by the Corsairs of Umbar. These were Angbor of Lamedon, Torthion of Lebennin, and Brassenor of Belfalas, and each of their lands was freed only when Aragorn and the Grey Company with the wraiths of the Oathbreakers swept along the coast liberating the Men of Gondor from the wrath of the Corsairs. Both Torthion and Brassenor were slain before Aragornâs arrival, leaving Angbor alone to rally the people of the coast and march to Minas Tirith. Aragorn named Angbor âthe Fearlessâ for his determination in leading four thousand men, many of which were his own horsemen, even after the destruction of his homeland. Indeed, his endurance through trial allowed Angbor to relieve Aragorn of the duty of protecting Minas Tirith when he marched to the Black Gate in a direct challenge to Sauron, for Angborâs forces would defend the city as he went on the offensive, both important roles in bringing about the end of the War and the freedom of Gondor.
Hi I just gotta say I'm so happy that you're fancasting Irish actors as people from the Blackroot Vale cause I've always thought of people from the White Mountains and those areas as being Celtic-coded. So thank you!
Yesss! All I'm seeing is the golden-haired eorlings and the dark numenoreans but WHERE MY REDHEADS AT?
I love Domhall Gleeson so much, you have no idea!!! đ±đđâ€ïž I was already super interested in your wonderfully conceived Derufin before, and now I'm even more determined to bring him into my AU with a significant role! With your permission, of course!
I know he's technically canon, but the character is one of those blank slates that makes him practically an OC (in my view, anyway). When you have the time, could you please give me an info dump of everything you've created for him, as much as you are comfortable sharing? If you don't mind! :)
And speaking of fancasting, is his father Duinhir played by Brendan Gleeson by any chance? đ
PS. Have fun with BG3! I haven't played it myself, but my sister spent a solid amount of time being lost to that game too. So I understand the fixation. đ
Thank you so much for sending this ask @sotwk! And thank you for your infinite patience, unfortunately my new job has been hectic so I've had to delay forming a replay, but HERE WE GO!
The second I read your idea about Brendan Gleeson being Duinhir it immediately became my canon also <3.
There are some things about the Derufin/Morwen/Boromir triangle that I've cut out from Under Our Darkening Skies.
"When Lady Morwen had first arrived in Minas Tirith, she had wasted no time to approach Boromir and subtly prodded him on his designs regarding marriage. He was, after all, the most sought after bachelor in Gondor. A bachelor still, in his late thirties, to his fatherâs eternal chagrin. In response, the Stewardâs Heir equally gently had let slip that he had not been planning to take a wife, and she had quickly pranced off to the greener pastures that the City offered."
Because of Morwen initially setting her sights on Boromir (I mean duh), Derufin is still to this day reluctant to make his feelings for her known. He thinks Morwen still prefers Boromir. In reality Morwen's making a pass on Boromir back then had been dictated more by her youthful ambition than any real feelings for him or even any genuine regard. So, Derufin, grow a pair and just ask her out already!!!
Some more trivia:
Derufin's older brother Duilin is prone to brooding and melancholy while Derufin is the funny, carefree one.
Derufin's love for Lady Morwen is rivalled only by his love for his finely made and custom-decorated yew longbow - a gift from Lord Steward given for Derufin's knighting. He has, of course, named the bow after the Lady. Boromir groans loudly whenever he's reminded of it. Derufin is so so so cringe about his bow but also INSANELY good at archery.
Derufin is one of the few people who know about Boromir's fling with the Archivist. He found out accidentally (and has been wishing to erase the image from his brain ever since).
Derufin is actually not the only member of Boromir and Faramir's friend group from their youth. The "pack", aside from Boromir, Faramir, Derufin and Duilin, also included Hirluin the Fair (nicknamed Pretty Boy by Derufin). Faramir befriended Hirluin when he squired in under Hador, the Lord of Pinnath Gelin. Hirluin (who has as of 3018 TE succeeded his late father) is a ladies man and a party animal, so his friendship with Faramir is an unlikely one. However, their bond is strong because of the shared memories from their youth.
I dread what will become of these babies during the Battle of Pelennor. Just know that I am out od my mind and I can promise nothing :D
