Each era of film has distinct trends in filmmaking where even one frame can tell you which era it's in. And I think the current era we're in is hyper focus. The depth perception is limited and backgrounds are "blurry" and the subject is the only thing in focus.
Yes, yes, there are reasons for shallow focus shots, but it feels like it is being overused now and backgrounds mean nothing. The actors may just as well be standing in front of a green screen, and quite honestly, that may be the main reason for this lack of detail.
