I populisti sono i politici che si rivolgono alla pancia dei loro elettori solleticandone i più bassi istinti. Un buon populista mente sapendo di mentire; ma ve ne sono anche di quelli che sono le prime vittime delle loro trappole retoriche e finiscono per credere alle menzogne che spargono in giro; la loro convinzione li rende più pericolosi, in quanto finiscono per risultare più credibili dei loro colleghi più scaltri.
In qualunque consesso, i populisti puntano alla maggioranza degli elettori offrendo scorciatoie e soluzioni facili a problemi complessi. Ma si tratta quasi sempre di scorciatoie non praticabili a piedi e mani nude, per cui si fa ricorso a ruspe, a roghi o all'abbattimento fisico degli oppositori per farsi strada e raggiungere il proprio fottuto obiettivo.
