There's a myth in the entertainment industry that straight white male audience members can't relate to a protagonist unless they are their exact same demographic, while other groups can. Therefore, it is safer from a business perspective to make every protagonist the so-called "default settings."
This is obviously false; anyone can relate to anyone or anything if they are written well enough. This myth is just an excuse for lazy/racist producers to keep different perspectives out of the protagonist's seat.
But when you think about it, the myth ITSELF is racist, AGAINST STRAIGHT WHITE MALES!!!
Are you trying to say the default settings demographic is predisposed to egotism and an inability to empathize with anyone outside themselves?! And they're the ONLY demographic with this issue?!?! Me think SOMEBODY is PROJECTING!!!!!!
