Angel: After such ardent efforts to dive as deeply as technologically possible at the time and later, during the Space Race, humanity suddenly stopped trying to reach deeper... Why is that?

Since I was a kid, I've been terrified of swimming in the pool alone, and terrified of the ocean to the point that if I see a log in the middle of the ocean, I would consider it as a shark and would not swim anymore. I hate my legs dangling in the water, I'm scared of not seeing what's underneath me yet I faced my fears and just kept swimming. And another thing, because of diving, I conquered my fear.
I never hesitated when they first invited me to discover scuba. I was lost in thoughts at first. I felt excited and scared at the same time. At the dive, I was the first one who did the back roll without hesitation and being scared. But the inner me is murmuring “justice please, I’m the youngest here and I’m the first one doing the backroll?” After the backroll, I went to the rope and tried to look down to see what’s underneath me. I saw fishes and beautiful corals. It was mesmerizing. I don’t care if I was the only person swimming in the middle of the ocean but I just saw a beautiful world made by God. My second home.
I belong to the ocean, and she to me - the salt that runs in her waters calls to the salt in my blood. She is powerful, beautiful and at the same time life giving and deadly. If I were not born a human, I would rather be a mermaid.
I reached 30m (100ft) underwater and it was my great achievement. It happened on the last day of our PADI training. Every time after the dive, we were floating in the middle of the sea waiting for the boat and not scared of what's underneath us anymore.
Looking at those thalassophobia photos all over the net once made me scared of the deep oceans but now, not anymore. It's somehow what I want to see down there. That's what divers do.
P.S. when I was 3 years old, I got compliments from my aunties that I swim like a real mermaid :3 Hechanovas are born divers.

The otherworldly creatures in the ocean's deepest depths - Lidia Lins
View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/the-otherwo...
About 60 percent of the ocean is a cold, dark region that spans down to 11,000 meters. This zone is known as the deep ocean, and though it seems like an inhospitable and remote corner of the planet, it is actually one of the greatest habitats on Earth. Lidia Lins explores how so many species thrive in this mysterious underwater world.
yay museum trip is happening tomorrow [as a late birthday thing] and maybe GOMA, I'm so keen for the museum though, will be visiting the deep oceans exhibit, heres hoping theres lots of shark stuff!!
