✨ Sunrisenfool’s Arcanes: Death Itself, ruler of all and patron of necromancers ✨

What is an Arcane?

Arcanes are magical beings, often older than time itself, and different from the Major Arcana. Whether respected, feared, worshipped, or unacknowledged, they have a specific domain. They are higher than demons in arcanaverse and more powerful than the Major Arcana, but less involved with humanity. They sit inexorably.

You cannot make deals with them. Only gain their favour (which is not up to you).

Who is Death?

Not to be mistaken with the XIII Major Arcana, if you know about the principle of how energy is never destroyed, just transformed, then you know about Death. Because of this, Death must be one of the most ancient, most powerful beings in the known universe, to the point some cultures have religions around them.

Death uses any pronouns, Death does not care for those. They care, however, about stories. Death wants energy (people) to live so when they meet him once their energy dies and transforms into something else, they have stories to tell them.

But beware! Death is not the Death Arcana. That's why they're referred to as "Death Itself". Death is a presence, Death is two empty sockets for eyes watching you and a disembowelled, distorted voice asking you about your life. Death sits in their garden and rules them all, and Death cannot be usurped, their power cannot be taken from them: they are the gravitational pull of all energy, forcing you to accept that you too must go. Everything must go, and only Death —the primary principle of transformation of energy and matter— will remain. Death Itself has low tolerance for imposters and misinterpretations of their task; losing their favour is easy, and they have had a known animosity with Valdemar, whom they call "the usurper".

Only those with the favour of Death and marked by them can be true Necromancers. This isn't enough to master the magical art of Necromancy, of course, but it's a start. Everyone else who can manipulate energy but was not born with the mark of Death, is an animancer or some other kind of energy manipulator, but not a "true" necromancer, even if they can reanimate bodies completely.

Every once in a while, Death picks a favourite: this can be anyone whether they are part of one of their cults or not. When you are born under Death, Death follows you everywhere, like a presence over your shoulder which will never leave you — they latch onto your energy, and they will only go when you die. It is said of those who are favourites of Death, that if you look at them from an angle, you can see Death standing by their shoulder. This comes with a special set of abilities, if you so choose to cultivate them, like the capacity for Death to occupy the body of their host. It is a dangerous ability to harness, because if you do not have enough vitality left in you, Death might completely overtake you.

It also has its perks: those close to the one Death Itself patronages are often engulfed in their protection. Currently, Death's host is Valerian Valperga-Cassano, great grandfather of Anatole Radošević.

Death Itself is associated with the Moth Queen, Herald and Messenger of Death, who is sometimes depicted as the XIII Major Arcana. This, however, depends on the deck, the region and the carrier of the Deck.
