Itâs so bizarre how often in Western media - as soon as something is animated - itâs automatically considered childish, family-friendly, less complex, smaller standards, less artistic, etc. Orrrrrr, itâs an intentionally edgy adult show which rebelliously âstrikesâ against the notion of family friendly animation. And because itâs being intentionally edgy and rebelling against family friendly animation, it doesnât reap up all the powers that storytelling can do, either. Itâs just... throwing in non-child-friendly things for the sake of being non-child-friendly.
And then. Then I see people marvel in shocked wonder about how [x] show is raising the bar that, âWhoa, animation CAN have complex storylines and emotions!â Like... of course it can. This shouldnât need to be proved. This shouldnât be an epiphany. This shouldnât be a novel concept. There are lots of different mediums to tell stories, but changing mediums doesnât automatically throw the concepts of how to write narratives out the window. Complexity in narrative can occur anywhere. Same thing with like... visual arts. I can draw something with a lot of skill, talent, and artistry with pastels... or I can paint with acrylics... but the notions of art and skill and talent and complexity donât just magically vanish when I switch from pastels to acrylics. Of fucking damned COURSE you can have animation thatâs complex. Like what the hell. Animating something doesnât automatically turn off show writersâ brain cells when theyâre coming up with story. Why are you surprised at this concept.
But because weâve gotten SO INGRAINED into the idea that animation = childish, we limit ourselves in a ridiculous area that shouldnât need conquering. Iâm ALL for more complex, emotional, powerful, meaningful narratives in animation. Animation is my jam. I adore it. I want it to be utilized to full effect as a medium. This is just such a fucking ridiculous thing to overcome that we never should have had to overcome. Because we got this fucking ridiculous idea that animation CANâT be complex simply because itâs ANIMATION. And thatâs so bizarre and ridiculous to me. And weâve already proven it can be a great storytelling medium... both in this culture and elsewhere... but lots of people just donât grasp the fact because itâs ANIMATION. Something like ATLA is way beyond the emotional depth, sophistication, and power of maaaaaany live action âadultâ shows. And yet the shows and stories that already ARE complex, deep, powerful, and artistic as fuck... are often not recognized as being such with the same level of appreciation for live action. And many other shows and stories are limited unnecessarily simply because we canât comprehend that when something is drawn, it can still be drawn to a good story.
Weâre getting better. Weâre getting better. I know weâre getting better. But the fact I still keep on running into these notions in person or online with people about animation (I was reading reviews, if youâre wondering where this rant comes from)... just makes me shake my head. This whole false correlation that animation automatically = unsophisticated, childish, etc. is out of this world BIZARRE.
OKAY SO I JUST FOUND THE MOST HILARIOUS FANFIC DRAFT IN MY NOTEBOOK AND I DONâT EVEN REMEMBER WRITING IT I AM CRINGINGÂ SO MUCH
3, 7, 26.
Astridâs locker door still wouldnât open. She kicked it in frustration. Unlike the movies, the locker did not magically open. She gritted her teeth and prayed to the gods before entering her combination one more time.
3, 7, 26.
Nothing happened.
If the locker was a human, it would be crying very loudly by now because of all the kicks it got. The locker could die for all she cared.
âBruh.â (bRUH IâM SCREAMING WHY OH WHY DID I WRITE THAT)
She closed her eyes. âWhat do you want, Ruff?â
Ruffnut Thorstonâs smirking face was not welcome at all. Her locker would not open, and she was not in the mood to carry out whatever crazy, stupid scheme Ruff, her brother, and his pet chicken had cooked up.
âLocker problems?â her retarded best friend asked. (IâM CRYING IâM SO SORRY GUYS I WAS LIKE THIS AT ONE POINT)
âNo, I just like standing around and kicking it for no reason.â
Ruff blinked once, then twice. âWell, thatâs weird.â
The girl exploded.
âYes I have locker problems you dimwit! This stupid thing wonât open! You do it for the love of Thor!â (Past me:Â âTHEY MUST USE THOR AND ODIN IN EVERY SENTENCE THEY USE!â)
âAlright, Ast, whatever you say,â Ruff responded in a sing-song voice. She stepped forwards, leaned down, and in thirty seconds Astridâs locker was open.
Astrid gaped and her arms fell limply to her sides. âHow did - what - how did you do that?â
Her friend leaned in close, as though to tell a secret, and whispered, âIlluminati magic.â
She punched her shoulder. Hard.
âYou twit. Tell me what you did.â
Rubbing her arm and scowling, Ruff said, âI entered the combination, genius. I know it, remember? You told me.â
âBut that doesnât make sense,â Astrid argued, as she got her books out, âI mustâve tried a thousand times. And, Odin help me, do not start singing âHelloâ because then I will dig your grave a thousand time.â (Back when I thought Astrid was cool and didnât realize she was a giant dork.)
âOh yeah?â Ruffnut challenged. âAlright. Enter your combination, Ms. Perfect. If it works, then I will scream âHelloâ into your ear. Donât diss Adele.â
AND THATâS IT IT ENDS RIGHT THERE. I THINK THE PLOT WAS GOING TO BE THAT ASTRID WAS ENTERING HICCUPâS LOCKER COMBO BY MISTAKE BECAUSE SHEâS SO USED TO IT. HOLY HELL, MY WRITING SUCKED IN THE BEGINNING OF 2016. THAT WASNâT SO LONG AGO. OH MAN.
Why the fucking fuck is it so hard to find blogs in some fandoms that post just positive content? More likely itâs going to be a blog liking one branch of the franchise and then shitting or being overtly critical on the rest.
Of course itâs important for us humans to be able to not only react well to criticism, but to understand and think through it, whether or not we ultimately end up agreeing with it. Avoiding information just because it doesnât jive with our emotions is dangerous of us to do. And we all have a right to post whatever we want on our own blogs. I know all that. But Iâm on this fucking website just to have some fucking fun with television shows and animated fictional people. This is my recreation zone and thatâs all I want to do with tumblr myself. Have fun. Doesnât anyone else feel the same? Iâm not here to listen to people salt about a show or a movie or a book that came out ten years ago. I just want to chill with blogs that are also posting positive content about good fandom material. I just want blogs where people can be like, âYouâre in this fandom? Iâm in this fandom too. I like this one part of the fandom. Yay!â
And yes I know this post is major salt itself. Forgive me. Let me have this one time vent. Dear Thor.
Is it just me, or is it that whenever Iâm in a work space with other teammates on a project, weâre all trying to elevate ourselves with as much technical jargon as possible to make it look like we definitely âdeserveâ to be on this team?
......or am I the only one doing this self-consciously, and everyone else is naturally yakking jargon without thought?
