For the nightmare meme, Kukui actually gets badly damaged from being attacked by a powerful Pokemon move. After a long time in the hospital, his health not getting better, he finally passes away. I am so sorry. I am evil bastard.
Send my muse a nightmare. Make my muse scream and wake up in a sweat.
Excitement was buzzing through Ash as he stepped onto the beach with Kukui and his Pokemon. The light of the sun was just beginning to peak over the horizon, the water giving off a slight shimmer. Ash loved mornings like this. they were peaceful and still as if there was nothing wrong with the world. It was their day off from school and everything had been planned out for most of the day and Ash couldn’t wait to get started.
First was morning practice with Pikachu and the others, working in their Z-moves. Then they would get some lunch at Mallow’s family restaurant, followed by a trip to the market. Finally, Kukui was going to have Ash help him make dinner, teaching him some of the basics of cooking so the boy could learn a few things, should he need to make dinner on his own at some point.
“Alright, Pikachu! You’re up first! You ready?” the boy grinned at his partner. Pikachu chattered back in response as he hopped down from Ash’s shoulder, buzzing with just as much excitement as his trainer as he took his place in front of him.
His other Pokemon were a different story. Waiting beside Ash were his Rowlet, Rockruff, and Litten. Rowlet was asleep as it usually was while Litten sat uninterested at the moment, grooming himself. Ash didn’t have a fire Z-crystal yet, so he wasn’t all that interested in the training for now. Rockruff however was energetic as ever, wishing to play and started to roughhouse with Litten.
“Alright Pikachu! Let’s show them our full power!” Ash’s moments were fluid as he struck each pose of his Z-Move, Pikachu moving in sync with him. “Gigavolt Havoc!” As Pikachu went to release his attack the roughhousing beside Ash had begun to escalate. That’s when everything seemed to start moving in slow motion. Litten had jumped back away from Rockruff, trying to get away from him, but collided into Pikachu instead. As surprised gasp escaped Ash as he watched the attack get knocked off course, no longer heading for the empty stretch of beach that had aimed for.
It was headed straight for Kukui.
“Professor!” Ash screamed as he watched in wide eyed horror as the attack hit its mark. There was nothing he could do except stand there frozen as the dust of the attack cleared. Anxiety grew in the pit of his stomach as he felt his heart sink deep into his chest. Lying on the beach in the aftermath of the attack was Professor Kukui, his body still except for the few sparks of residual electricity coming off his body.
“P-Pro... fessor...” Ash choked out the word, his voice barely audible as tears began to well up in his eyes. His movements were almost robotic as he walked over to Kukui, his legs heavy. He dropped to his knees beside Kukui as he looked down at him. He wasn’t moving, and from the look of it he wasn’t breathing either. Ash had no idea what to do. He reached out and placed his hands on Kukui’s chest, shaking him lightly as the tears begun to spill over, rolling down his cheeks.
“Kukui... Kukui, come on...” His voice breaks with each word. “You gotta get up... K-Kukui...” He waits, but there’s no movement of response from the professor. Tears are now pouring down the boy’s face as the realization hits him all at once.
Ash is screaming, not realizing that he’s awake now. He’s up in the loft sitting on the couch where he usually sleeps, his blanket now on the floor beside it. His Pokemon have been all startled awake by his screams and are frozen for the moment as they watch him. His eyes begin to adjust to the dark, but his vision is blurry. He had been crying in his sleep and the tears had carried over to him being awake. Trying to calm himself he went to try to dry his eyes and wipe away the tears when the light of the moon glinted off of something on his wrist.
He stared at his wrist wide eyed for a moment before his blood suddenly ran cold as he realized he had his Z-ring still around his wrist. He had fallen asleep with it on. Another scream escaped the boy as he quickly ripped the ring off, the images of his nightmare still fresh in his mind as he chucked it out of the loft and across the house, the Z-ring clattering to the floor.
Shaking, Ash pulled his knees up to his chest as he buried his face in his arms. Sobs shook his small frame, his breath hitching in his throat. He felt like he couldn’t breathe as tears continued to spill over. The images plagued his mind which only made him cry harder. It was his fault. Kukui had died and it was all his fault. It may have been just a dream, but it felt so real.
